Road and rail transportation systems are facing a comprehensive digital transformation: vehicles, infrastructure, and transportation systems must be securely networked and coordinated in real time to increase capacity, and efficiency. Cooperative systems such as C-ITS (Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems) enable vehicles, traffic lights, traffic signs, and traffic control centers to communicate with one another in real time. This places high demands on the integrity and authenticity of the messages. In rail transport, standards for train control and signaling systems (ERTMS/ETCS) impose high demands on interoperability. For remote areas, ubiquitous network coverage is becoming increasingly important, with terrestrial mobile networks being connected to non-terrestrial components such as satellites and, in the future, HAPS.
