Prof Dr Sonja Schimmler

Dr Sonja Schimmler is head of the research group “Digitalization and Opening up Science” at Fraunhofer FOKUS. She is also an associated scientist at the Technical University of Berlin.

In her research, Dr Sonja Schimmler focuses on the digitalisation and opening up of science, with a particular emphasis on research data infrastructures. Her research interests range from semantic web and linked data, data science and artificial intelligence to software engineering and human-centred computing.

At the Weizenbaum Institute, Dr Sonja Schimmler heads the research group “Digitalization and Opening up Science”. She is active in the Berlin University Alliance (BUA) as Principal Investigator of the project “A Digital Research Space for BUA”. She is involved in the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) as spokesperson for the NFDI4DataScience consortium, as well as co-spokesperson for the NFDI4Cat and Base4NFDI consortia and the Common Infrastructures section.

Dr Sonja Schimmler is a computer scientist, holds a doctorate from the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich and studied at the Technical University of Munich and the Georgia Institute of Technology (USA).
