The project "6G Native Extensions for XR Technologies" – 6G NeXt, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), aims to develop a scalable, modular and flexible infrastructure enabling a variety of industrial and end-user use cases with requirements exceeding those of today's 5G network in terms of intelligence, performance and efficiency.
With the SENTINEL lighthouse project, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is launching a lead project to develop key technologies for the upcoming 6G mobile communications standard. The focus is on terahertz technologies and solutions for flexible networks. Fraunhofer FOKUS, as well as four other Fraunhofer institutes, are involved in SENTINEL.
The 6G Research and Innovation Cluster (6G-RIC) will develop the essential key technologies of future 6G communication systems. In addition to the actual technology development, the focus will be on setting up a powerful test infrastructure. For the 6G-RIC, FOKUS will practically test and analyze the management of a distributed RAN functionality as well as innovative network management and data layer functions.
The 6G-Sandbox project aims to provide an open pan-European test environment for 6G experimentation and validation of 5G-Advanced and 6G capabilities. Companies and organizations can conduct trials on four experimental platforms. Fraunhofer FOKUS is part of the project and provides a test environment in Berlin.
