Mobile Cloud Networking
Nov. 01, 2012 to Apr. 30, 2016
The new EU funded large-scale Integrating Project (IP) ICT Call 8 FP7-ICT-2011-8 Future Communication Architecture for Mobile Cloud Services starts in November under the title of “Mobile Cloud Networking” having TU Berlin/AV and Fraunhofer FOKUS/NGNI involved.
Proposal Abstract and idea of EU “MOBILE CLOUD NETWORKING” project:
MobileCloud is Mobile Network + Decentralised Computing + Smart Storage offered as One Service - On-Demand, Elastic and Pay-As-You-Go. The top-level objectives of the MobileCloud project are
- to develop a novel mobile “network” architecture and technologies, using proof-of-concept prototypes, to lead the way from current mobile networks to a fully cloud-based mobile communication system,
- to extend cloud computing so as to support on-demand and elastic provisioning of novel mobile services. MobileCloud will investigate, implement, and evaluate the technological foundations for that system.
The end-to-end control and management orchestrate infrastructure and services across several technological domains: wireless, mobile core and data center, providing guaranteed end-to-end SLAs and AAA as well as service mobility through the Follow-Me Cloud concept.
Besides the technological aspects, MobileCloud will identify and evaluate overarching novel business models that support the exploitation of the mobile cloud in various multi-stakeholder scenarios. The MobileCloud architecture will be evaluated in realistic scenarios and with a set of concrete use-cases, based on applications such as mobile cloud enabled digital signage. The evaluation will be done from diverse viewpoints, exploiting the well-balanced and representative consortium, including leading industry from the telecommunication as well as the cloud computing segments.
The chair AV of TU Berlin is mainly involved in the WP3: “Mobile Cloud Infrastructural Foundation” and WP5: “Mobile Platform” development around IMS-as-a-Service based on Cloud Computing principles (on-demand, elastic, pay-as-you-go).
Fraunhofer FOKUS is mainly involved in WP3: “MobileCloud Infrastructural Foundations” and WP4: “Mobile Network Cloud” around virtualization concepts of the Evolved-Packet-Core (EPC).
The OpenEPC toolkit of Fraunhofer FOKUS and TU Berlin is a major building block for validating concepts developed the context of the MobileCloud project. Both partners have a long history of Fraunhofer FOKUS and the Chair AV in Next-Generation-Networks starting with Session-Initiation-Protocol (SIP), IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), and Evolved-Packet-Core (EPC). OpenIMSCore and OpenEPC are internationally recognized toolkits, which are used by the academia and industry for fast prototyping of novel access-networks, core network components as well as innovating services development.
