SAND streaming solution receives DASH Award

News from July 02, 2019

At this year's ACM Multimedia Systems conference, a scientific paper on the Fraunhofer FOKUS SAND streaming solution was awarded the “Excellence in DASH Award”. FAMIUM SAND offers tools that enable content providers to track the streaming performance.

From June 18-21, 2019 the ACM Multimedia Systems Conference took place in Amherest, USA. The DASH Industry Forum honored Fraunhofer FOKUS with the “DASH-IF Excellence Award”. Stefan Pham, research assistant in the business unit Future Applications and Media of Fraunhofer FOKUS, received the award for his work “Evaluation of shared resource allocation using SAND for ABR streaming”. The jury selected projects that could support the future economic value of DASH.

MPEG-SAND defines standardized message formats for communication between server, client and network elements involved in the streaming process of MPEG-DASH. With the FAMIUM SAND solution information about network, server and player can be checked in real time. SAND metric reporting is an important tool for content providers as it enables players to provide streaming performance information like average throughput, buffer level, representation switch events and initial playout delay.
