Successful completion of the study “AI Support in Learning Management Systems 2”
The Fraunhofer Institutes FOKUS, FKIE and IOSB, in collaboration with the German Armed Forces, successfully completed the study ‘AI Support in Learning Management Systems 2’ in December. The aim was to further develop the use of AI functionalities in learning management systems (LMS) for modern, attractive training in the German Armed Forces and to test them in protected IT environments.
What was achieved?
- Analysis of requirements for data protection, IT security and user-friendliness
- Modular system architecture for personalised learning recommendations and adaptive learning environments
- Implementation of relevant AI functionalities
- Testing of the system at the Army NCO School
Particularly popular: the chatbot rAIbert, which provides quick access to regulations, course materials and learning progress. The participants praised the usability and cited the following as key added values:
- Appropriate approach to different learning types
- Time savings achieved
- Greater flexibility in task processing
- Overview and project news on the AI-LMS website [GER] (kilms.fraunhofer.de)
- Project description
- Technical background on CLM and AI in LMS (clm.fraunhofer.de)
- Context of the German Armed Forces' virtual learning environment (VLBw) (clm.fraunhofer.de)
Objective and background
The German Armed Forces has set itself the goal of developing attractive, future-proof training with precise training control. To this end, the Army Command wants to exploit the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and commissioned a study entitled ‘AI Support for Learning Management Systems’ in 2021. The aim of this exploratory preliminary study was to identify the advantages of using AI in learning management systems.
The follow-up study ‘AI LMS 2’ was again carried out in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institutes FKIE, FOKUS and IOSB. The team pursued the goal of expanding the demonstrator with additional functionalities and implementing their use in protected IT environments. As part of the study, the requirements for software architecture, data protection, IT security and user-friendliness were analysed. One focus is on creating a modular system architecture that supports personalised learning recommendations and adaptive learning environments.
The study was commissioned by the Bundeswehr Planning Office and carried out by the three Fraunhofer Institutes FKIE, FOKUS and IOSB for the Army Command in cooperation with the Training Command. The following Bundeswehr institutions were also involved in the study: the Armed Forces Office, the Cyber and Information Space, the Cyber and Information Space Training Centre, the Army Officer School, the Army NCO School, the Engineer School and BWI GmbH (the Bundeswehr's IT system house).
