5G-MAG Reference Tools: The 5G-MAG Reference Tools are an open-source software toolbox for connected media applications. The tools are filling the gap between the development of specifications for media services and their conformance testing, validation and prototyping. The development focuses on hybrid media services with 5G Media Streaming 5G Broadcast for OTT apps and DVB-I services.
This project will tackle the environmental impact of media consumption by developing consolidated metrics for energy consumption at major steps of the end-to-end technology supply chain, best-of-breed energy-saving features into a unified user experience.
FAMIUM GreenView: FAMIUM GreenView by Fraunhofer FOKUS is the solution for energy-efficient streaming on SmartTVs. Our technology dynamically adjusts streaming content for energy-saving playback without altering the original content. Seamlessly integrated into streaming apps, FAMIUM GreenView uses an AI model to optimize settings based on content, device, and display type. Trained with data from our Green Streaming Measurement Framework and Stream Analytics, it can save up to 20 percent energy on streaming devices. FAMIUM Deep Encode: Title-based encoding solution for live and VoD content
Video streaming content differs in terms of complexity and requires specific encoding settings in order to achieve a certain visual quality. The FAMIUM Deep Encode solution leverages machine learning techniques to avoid test encodes and enables per-scene encoding for live linear content. It automatically predicts video quality metrics like PSNR, SSIM and VMAF, detects complex metadata like scene changes, and performs object classification and labeling for each video. FAMIUM SAND is a streaming analytics solution for online video streaming. The SANDLibrary is a plug-in for video players, such as dash.js, exoPlayer or hls.js. The SANDServer includes a Web interface to analyze cross-platform streaming analytics, featuring real-time metric reporting to monitor player performance information like average throughput, buffer level and representation switch events. Nowadays, the world's Internet traffic is predominantly made up of video streaming. In order to support the Internet's limited transmission capacities, videos are compressed during encoding. Reducing video file sizes comes at an expense, however, when disseminating large volumes of streaming video via the Internet, resulting in a loss in quality. Live streaming, in particular, has special requirements with regards to the video transmission process, and can benefit from intelligent approaches in compressing content in a more efficient manner.
Our FAMIUM Deep Encode solution utilizes artificial intelligence methods for automating per-title encoding for Video on Demand and live streaming. During a live playout, we analyze the video and collect existing playback metrics in order to predict the upcoming optimal ladder. With the prediction, encoding settings are then adapted accordingly.
Video analytics is conducted on a per-scene basis in order to adapt settings to the current scene. In comparison to traditional encoding solutions, average storage and transfer volumes are reduced by 30 percent. This large decrease leads to significant cost savings in the long-run, and improves the overall Quality of Experience for the end user. This FAMIUM Deep Encode solution is codec and format agnostic, and the quality prediction (VMAF) is based on several extracted unique video characteristics.

Our solution enables dynamic ad insertion and flexible over-the-top streaming workflows including VoD-to-Live services across a multitude of devices and platforms via MPEG DASH, HLS and HbbTV. Dynamic digital video advertising can be integrated per user and in real time, in both traditional linear and on-demand content. Content manipulation and dynamic ad insertion is powered by the FOKUS components Manifest Stitcher and Aggregation Service, operating on manifest level in a highly flexible and scalable system architecture. Individual stream management and channel orchestration is available via the FOKUS Stream Scheduler.

The Cloud-based 360° Video Playout offers a high quality 360° video experience for smart TV devices (HbbTV, Android TV, Fire TV, WebOS, Chrome…) as well as on the Web and on mobile devices. It provides a 4K Field of View using Adaptive Streaming to render the view in the cloud and streams only the visible area of the 360° content to the client. This reduces the required transfer bit-rates to the client, which can provide smooth playback of 24 K 360° source videos - on widely deployed TV platforms), web, and mobile. The solution supports Live and On-demand 360° Video Streaming. Content playout is compatible with existing CDNs using DASH and supports DRM over EME.

Video streaming content differs in terms of complexity and requires title-specific encoding settings to guarantee a certain visual quality. A classic “one-fits-all” encoding ladder ignores this characteristics and applies the same encoding settings to all videos. FAMIUM Deep Encode leverages different machine learning techniques to identify the optimal encoding ladder for all types of video content. Our solution supports title- and scene-based encoding for VoD and live streams. By constant validation and retraining of our models the accuracy and efficiency of the underlying algorithms is improved with each input and the entire system learns on its own. Furthermore, it uses information from SAND metric reporting to enable context-aware encoding and meet the desired QoE expectations.

SAND (ISO/IEC 23009 DASH Part 5) defines standardized message formats for server and network assisted DASH. FAMIUM SANDLibrary and SANDServer cover SAND metric reporting and SAND shared resource allocation. The solution offers real-time metric reporting to monitor OTT player performance and allows fair bandwidth sharing of multiple DASH clients competing for bandwidth in the same network (e.g. sports stadium, plane, train, home networks etc.). Furthermore, ML-enabled analytics can derive the QoE Score for streaming sessions.

Playout Side AD Insertion (PSAI) allows to dynamically insert ads into a linear broadcast TV channel at the broadcaster’s playout, whereby the ad decisioning for a specific ad is made based on real-time audience data provided by a linear broadcast TV measurement solution. Thus, it enables broadcasters to sell their TV inventory in a digital-like approach (programmatic advertising) in real-time based on the actual viewership of their program. In addition to traditional viewership profile data as age, gender and social status, the solution features advanced data as program affinities and interest groups allowing advertisers to buy inventory for similar target groups both digital and on TV.

The Interactive 360° Streaming Suite makes elements of 360° videos clickable and thus allows an interactive experience for the viewer. While the Cloud-based 360° Video Playout offers the optimal streaming solution by significantly reducing the required bitrate, the Interactive 360° Streaming Suite adds the storytelling feature to 360° videos.
The Interactive 360° Streaming Suite offers many options to the content creator to make an individual viewing experience possible and can be used on desktop as well as on mobile devices. It consists of a web based editor as well as cross-platform players (HbbTV, Web, mobile devices, HDMI sticks, etc.). The tool provides various pre-defined markers as well as customizable icons to tag different elements of the video to make them interactive. Markers can be sticked on static and moving elements in the video or on a fixed screen position.
Interaction elements allow for the dynamic display of overlays and supplementary information as well as to link to other video segments and resources.
The Interactive 360° Streaming Suite will be presented at the stand of ZVEI Deutsche TV Plattform at IFA Berlin.

The Cloud-based 360° Video Playout allows the viewing of high quality 360° videos on devices with constrained capabilities such as TV sets and HDMI stick devices. Usually the delivery of such video material consumes a large bitrate and results in a considerable processing load to perform the geometrical view projection and rendering. For example in order to achive a 4K FoV resolution, bit-rates of 200 – 300 Mbit/s is required to stream the complete 24K 360° video and it requires a few seconds to render the 4K FoV frame from the 24K equirectangular frames – which makes a smooth playback impossible even on modern devices with high processing and graphical computing capabilities. Field of View Adaptive Streaming addresses both aspects and reduces the required bit-rates and processing resources by rendering the field of view in the cloud in advance and by streaming only the selected field of view to the client. By doing so, many features which are applicable to classical videos can be also applied to the FOV videos for example: adaptive streaming using DASH and MSE, efficient delivery over existing CDNs and DRM Support over EME, and even Live Streaming scenarios. The solution also supports synchronization across multiple TVs and other devices (even mixed) so that a shared as well as an extended experience is possible.

The “FAMIUM DAI Service” is an end-to-end solution for ad-insertion in MPEG-DASH and HLS. The flexible chain consists of multiple micro services, that can easily be deployed and replaced and integrate well with existing components. Our solution wraps the complexity of the ad-insertion process into a simple, easy to understand, web-based management interface.
It supports different ways of ad insertion, namely server-based and client-based ad insertion. The service covers the latest MPEG-DASH ad-insertion techniques like XLink and DASH inline and inband events. Moreover, it has support for ad signaling mechanisms like SCTE35 and ad server standards like VAST, VPAID and VMAP. Our tools can be used to target different platforms, including HTML5 browser, HbbTV 1.5/2.0 devices and native DASH and HLS player running on Android, FireTV or Chromecast.

MPEG-SAND, specified in ISO/IEC 23009-5, defines standardized message formats for communication between server, client and network elements involved in the streaming process of MPEG-DASH. SAND-capable components are able to exchange real-time information of network and server components, as well as player behavior and performance data.
Fraunhofer FOKUS has implemented two libraries covering important parts of the SAND specification: The “SANDLibrary” provides tools for SAND metric reporting and the transport of status and PER messages. The library is implemented in JavaScript and integrates well with existing DASH players like dash.js, Shaka and hasplayer.js. The “SANDServer” is a Node.js-based SAND server to store metric reporting information in a database and handle the SAND shared resource allocation use case.
SAND metric reporting is an important tool for content providers as it enables players to provide streaming performance information like average throughput, buffer level, representation switch events and initial playout delay (QoE metrics defined in ISO/IEC 23009-1). SAND shared resource allocation allows network components to control how much bandwidth a client should use. This is useful in scenarios in which multiple DASH clients share the same network and compete for the available bandwidth (e.g in a stadium, train or airplane).

Solutions on Virtual Reality, HbbTV, DVB-T and HTML
The Fraunhofer FOKUS Cloud-based 360° Video Playout for HbbTV makes it possible to watch 360° video content on low capability devices such as HbbTV. The delivery of this huge source video material consumes a large bandwidth and results in a considerable processing load for the view projection and rendering. Therefore, the videostream is rendered on server side with the Fraunhofer FOKUS 360° Video Cloud Streaming Server. It allows high quality 360° video live streaming with low latency. With the 360° Video Control Mobile App users can navigate the video by remote control or a mobile device to freely change their perspective of view.
The Fraunhofer FOKUS Cloud-based 360° Video Playout for HbbTV allows content providers and broadcasters to provide an innovative video experience on traditional TV screens. The capability of view analytics allows content producers and advertisers to get specific information what viewers are interested in and what part of the scene they are watching, allowing detailed feedback about home user interests that wasn't previously available outside of limited lab trials.

Creating HbbTV apps made easy
The HbbTV Application Toolkit – HAT – presents a CMS for creation of HbbTV applications, which allows content creators without specific technical skills to build interactive TV applications and is developed by Fraunhofer FOKUS' Competence Center Future Applications and Media (FAME). So far HAT covers a simple themes collection which can be accessed through the editor UI. Here the content editor can choose from different layouts and designs regarding the background and color scheme. The layouts include basic modules, broadcast or IP-video, text, image and live blog. The live blog includes an external live blog coming via social media APIs. We see a great potential in the uptake of programme-related HbbTV apps creating new markets for developers and technology providers. HbbTV Application Toolkit Editor HAT provides an editor/CMS with a set of GUI templates that can be filled with text, images audio and video content via a responsive user interface for desktop and mobile devices alike. The content palette can be extended by customized modules, e.g. for display of social-media feeds. The toolkit includes a collection of templates and modules, allowing control of all application elements including broadcast source, IP video source, images, text, picture gallery, social media feeds, popups and overall application layout. When creating more than one page, a navigation menu is automatically generated.

Cloud-based monitoring of DVB-T/T2 networks
Linked data for service quality and experience gain in DVB-T/T2 networks. Digital service broadcast suffers from misconfigurations at the source and dynamically changing signal propagation conditions. The lack of feedback leads to undisclosed service degradation and decreased experience. Selective professional monitoring is costly and often not enough to cover large areas.
Our Broadcast Probing System offers cloud-based continuous near real-time monitoring of broadcast networks by utilizing massively distributed low-cost probes. Controlled either individually or in groups the probes are securely instructed to execute scheduled jobs like scanning, tuning and transport stream inspection. The collected spatiotemporal data links RF characteristics and stream quality (e.g. Signal levels, TS packet errors), multiplexed tables (e.g. AIT/HbbTV, EIT/EPG) and AV dumps to allow for live analysis, evaluation and integration into monitoring environments
