6G-RIC
Aug. 01, 2021 to July 31, 2025
The 6G Research and Innovation Cluster (6G-RIC) will develop the essential key technologies of future 6G communication systems. In addition to the actual technology development, the focus is on establishing a powerful test infrastructure. The test infrastructure is intended to enable the testing of new technology components under realistic and open conditions in order to accelerate direct exploitation and support the establishment of a new ecosystem in the medium term. Key technologies are also to be tested at an early stage in the form of so-called technology demonstrators.
For the 6G-RIC, FOKUS will live-test and analyze the management of a distributed RAN functionality as well as innovative network management and data layer functions.
The 6G-RIC is part of the 6G strategy of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which is to be funded with up to 250 million euros over 4 years. A total of around 50 research partners from science and industry are involved in the four hubs. The project coordinator for the 6G-RIC hub is the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI). In addition to the 6G-RIC, Fraunhofer FOKUS is also involved in the Open6GHub.
