“My goal is to shorten the path of research results to product.”

5G campus networks, satellite communication, 6G mobile communications standard: Dr. Marius Corici becomes co-director of the Software-based Networks business unit.

Since January 1, 2026, Dr. Marius Corici has been heading the Software-based Networks business unit together with Prof. Dr. Thomas Magedanz. He has been conducting research on the communication networks of the future at the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS since 2005. Among other things, he played a leading role in the development of Open5GCore, which is already being used in more than 150 test environments worldwide. He is currently focusing on the development of 6G networks and the new possibilities enabled by AI and satellite communication.

Marius Corici summarizes his goals as follows: “Our task is to support the industry with cutting-edge research and practical implementations so that it becomes clear what works and what doesn't. This forms the basis for strategic decisions and accelerates the introduction of new technologies. For this, we need innovative solutions – especially where gaps between theoretical research and operational reality become apparent. It requires a comprehensive understanding of network technologies, a deep familiarity with the research landscape, effective system integration, and targeted implementation and adaptation for specific use cases, supported by a robust scientific framework for evaluation and validation.”

By developing new concepts and transferring research and standardization results into operational systems, modern software development technologies are making new network functionality and end-to-end solutions more readily available. The business unit already has decades of experience with this approach. This is demonstrated, for example, by the significant number of publications, as well as by the software toolkits: Open6GCore, OpenLANES, Open5GCore, OpenBaton, OpenEPC, OpenIMSCore, and many more.

Meet Dr. Marius Corici from March 2 to 5, 2026, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in Hall 7, Booth 7C62.
