The aim of the project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), is to strengthen the resilience of the German healthcare system and to significantly improve decision-making processes in exceptional situations.

As part of the REAKT project, an innovative real-time platform is being developed that brings together information on available resources, treatment capacities and patient flows across different sectors. This is intended to enable hospitals, emergency services, health authorities and other stakeholders to act more quickly and with greater confidence, even under exceptional pressure, and to make optimal use of available capacities.

Fraunhofer FOKUS is playing a central role in the project. The institute is developing the methodological and technical core of a federated and interoperable data ecosystem that securely and reliably brings together a wide variety of data sources from the healthcare sector and civil protection, even under crisis conditions. On this basis, an integrated simulation environment is being created that maps patient flows, resource availability, critical infrastructure and resilient communication networks within a single digital model.

Particular emphasis is placed on the realistic simulation and evaluation of crisis scenarios. The models developed are visualised and brought to life in an immersive way in Fraunhofer FOKUS’s newly designed SIRIOS Lab. There, various operational and stress scenarios can be analysed, tested and evaluated in collaboration with project partners in order to identify possible courses of action at an early stage and improve crisis preparedness.

Together with Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Fraunhofer ISST, the Robert Koch Institute, the Academy of Trauma Surgery (AUC), Capgemini and other partners from the worlds of science, healthcare and the public sector, Fraunhofer FOKUS will be working over the next three years to lay the digital foundations for a more resilient healthcare system.

REAKT thus represents a key building block for a healthcare system that remains capable of functioning even in crisis situations and facilitates the exchange of relevant information where every minute counts.
