NFDI4DataScience enters its second funding phase
Making better use of research data, strengthening AI research
The work of NFDI4DataScience (NFDI4DS) will continue: On July 10, 2026, the Joint Science Conference (GWK) decided to continue funding the NFDI consortia from the second funding round of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). At the same time, the federal and state governments secured long-term funding for the NFDI through 2038. Person with a tablet sitting in front of the Chancellery in Berlin
NFDI4DataScience is developing a research data infrastructure for the fields of data science and artificial intelligence. The goal is to make scientific data, models, software, and other digital resources easier to find, more accessible, and usable over the long term. In doing so, the consortium is laying the groundwork for transparent and reproducible research.
With the second funding phase, NFDI4DS can further develop existing services and establish new offerings for researchers. A reliable research data infrastructure is essential for ensuring that scientific findings can be shared, verified, and used to address new research questions more quickly. Especially given the growing role of artificial intelligence in science, the responsible handling of data, models, and software is becoming increasingly important.
“We look forward to further expanding our offerings for the community. Given the profound changes brought about by generative AI throughout the entire research process, this is more important than ever,” says Professor Sonja Schimmler, spokesperson for NFDI4DataScience and head of research data infrastructure at the Fraunhofer FOKUS, Principal Investigator of the research group “Digitization and Openness of Science” at the Weizenbaum Institute, and visiting professor at the Technische Universität Berlin.
