With the Open Data portal “Open.NRW”, the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia intends to render government action more transparent. As far as possible, the state's administrative data is to be published as open data. We support and advise the state government in this process - from data management to publication of the data to its utilization.

In order to create a secure, sovereign data infrastructure for the state, the citizens, as well as for companies and institutions in Europe, data silos and lacking standards have to be overcome and transparency has to be established. The project “Possible: Phoenix open software stack for interoperable engagement in dataspaces” makes a contribution to this as one of 11 research projects supported by the Federal Network Agency over three years in the Gaia-X funding competition.

How can artificial intelligence (AI) become comprehensible for industrial processes? This question is being investigated by the EU-funded project XMANAI (Explainable Manufacturing Artificial Intelligence). Fraunhofer FOKUS participates as a scientific partner for real-time data management.

IT security is a complex network of attack vectors, countermeasures, defensive technologies and awareness measures. This difficult subject matter poses major challenges for IT managers in small and medium-sized enterprises. The ELITE project is designed to create experience sites for “ErLebbare IT-SichErheit durch mobile IT-Sec.PopUp-Labs”.

The EU project “DECIDO” aims to enable and improve evidence-based governance within public authorities through the use of innovative methods, tools and data. DECIDO will connect public administrations with the data and computing infrastructure of the European Open Science Cloud, so that public authorities can use the services and the data offered there for their own evidence-based policy-making.

The project GLASS aims to fundamentally improve and automate the administrative processes, service quality and data exchange of public administration.

At the beginning of 2020, the three-year project “Transferstelle IT-Sicherheit im Mittelstand (TISiM)“ (Transfer Point for IT Security in Business), started as part of the BMWi's initiative “IT-Sicherheit in der Wirtschaft“ (IT-security in the economy). Within this framework, two business units of Fraunhofer FOKUS - DPS and ESPRI - will support companies from medium-sized businesses with up-to-date information to protect themselves against cyber-attacks.

In the HYKIST project, a real-time-based AI speech assistance system for basic and emergency medicine is being developed as a pilot. The AI-supported communication is intended to facilitate conversations with medical professionals for people who have only limited German skills. Thanks to automatic speech recognition, machine translation and linkage to a teleconferencing platform, the supervising interpreters are supported in conveying complex medical issues in a user-friendly way.

New technologies for urban transformation: The H2020 project Urbanite (Supporting the decision-making of URBAN transformation with the use of dIsruptive TEchnologies) develops a model for sustainable urban development based on the example of urban mobility. For this purpose, algorithms from the field of data-driven decision support and a data management platform will be provided.

As part of a long-term strategic co-operation, Fraunhofer FOKUS is advising the Deutscher Industrie- und Handelskammertag (DIHK) (Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce) on the definition of its e-government and IT strategy.

As part of the implementation of the Online Access Act, the Hamburg Senate Chancellery is developing a digital modular system: pre-programmed low-code modules for internal administrative processes are intended to considerably simplify and accelerate the creation and provision of software for administrative applications at federal, state and local level in future.

A digital voice assistant based on artificial intelligence supports Hamburg parents in applying for child benefits etc. - barrier-free and in compliance with data protection laws.
