SIRIOS Lab at Fraunhofer FOKUS

The SIRIOS Lab at the Fraunhofer FOKUS offers collaborative solutions for public safety devised from the perspective of the citizens concerned. As a demonstration room and research laboratory, the SIRIOS Lab provides experts, decision-makers and politicians with an independent framework which permits them to shed light on the interaction of new technologies as well as on the legal, organizational, social-scientific, and economic challenges on their way to being addressed in practical terms.

safety lab

A central challenge in safety and security research lies in presenting complex safety solutions not merely in theoretical terms, but in a manner that makes them experientially accessible. For more than ten years, Fraunhofer FOKUS has operated the safety lab, a successful safety research lab in

which scenarios are vividly visualized and demonstrated to illustrate the interplay of interconnected technologies in crisis management and to facilitate the discussion of novel approaches.

Furthermore, the safety lab also served as a “Showcase for Safety Research,” in which a wide range of flagship projects from the Federal Government’s national security research program were presented in narrative form and contextualized within their broader framework.

Building on this success, the lab has been further developed into a state-of-the-art demonstration and exhibition space – the SIRIOS Lab (launching March 2026) – featuring advanced media technology, expanded visualization areas, and a modern spatial design.

Demonstration and Visualization

Through the immersive depiction of a realistic threat scenario and the organizational processes it triggers, visitors to the SIRIOS Lab are directly involved in the demonstration. Various exhibit areas each represent a key stakeholder in the public security and safety domain. Their interaction renders the complexity of networked security both tangible and readily comprehensible. By integrating the latest project results – along with the

ongoing contributions of the SIRIOS Lab partners – the research laboratory remains scientifically up to date. Moreover, feedback from end users obtained through workshops can be directly incorporated into the further development of scenarios and solutions.

Become Our Partner

The lab maintains an open framework for partners and stakeholders seeking to contribute their expertise and technological capabilities, and to convey these to end users. Utilizing a platform with open interfaces, complementary solutions can be integrated – for instance, to effectively illustrate the specific benefits of an individual solution within the comprehensive context of a crisis. Prospectively, the SIRIOS Lab may also provide a venue for the delivery of specialized lectures with immersive visualizations, as well as for the conduct of workshops, exercises, or scenario-based simulations.
