DIN SPEC 91377 lays the foundations for future-proof smart city platforms

Fraunhofer FOKUS played a key role in the development of DIN SPEC 91377 on ‘Data models and protocols in open urban platforms’. It describes how urban data platforms should be structured and which data models and protocols should be used to efficiently exchange and analyse data from different systems and make it available for innovative applications. The focus is on open standards, vendor-neutral interfaces, data sovereignty and a sustainable and scalable architecture.
Greater interoperability, fewer siloed solutions
Many local authorities now use a wide variety of systems and data sources. However, differing data sources and proprietary interfaces often prevent the efficient exchange of data. DIN SPEC 91377 now provides a framework that describes tried-and-tested standards and specific requirements for the interoperable operation of urban data platforms, thereby facilitating the integration of existing systems and the introduction of new digital services.
For example, this makes it easier to integrate existing specialist systems and sensor platforms, enabling local authorities to provide new digital services – such as real-time information on traffic, the environment or available parking spaces – more quickly and cost-effectively.
