New FOKUS Business Unit SPIN for Sovereign Digital Systems
With the new Sovereign Platform and Innovation Engineering (SPIN) business unit, Fraunhofer FOKUS has been strengthening its activities in sovereign, secure, and high-quality digital systems since September 2026. The business unit supports public administrations, operators of critical infrastructure, and companies in designing trustworthy digital systems and operating them sustainably.
Digital sovereignty is a key prerequisite for the ability of government, business, and society to act effectively. At the same time, requirements for security, data protection, resilience, and regulatory compliance are increasing. In its new SPIN business unit, Fraunhofer FOKUS brings together selected expertise in security and trust, sovereignty and architecture, as well as engineering and quality.
Security and Sovereignty by Design
SPIN researchers develop, analyze, and evaluate solutions for complex, interconnected, and regulated digital ecosystems. Security, data protection, trustworthiness, and resilience are considered from the outset as fundamental properties of systems, platforms, and architectures.
To this end, SPIN combines modern engineering methods with expertise in security and digital sovereignty. This results in digital and AI-based systems designed for secure and resilient operation throughout their entire lifecycle.
The range of services includes Security by Design, Zero Trust, and Identity Management, sovereign cloud and AI architectures, as well as trustworthy AI, governance, compliance, and standardization.
From Strategy to Implementation
SPIN supports partners from strategic planning and architecture through development and implementation. The business unit combines scientific expertise with methodological competence and practical engineering experience. The goal is to harness innovation potential securely and strengthen organizations’ digital capabilities in the long term.
The business unit addresses public administrations, operators of public and critical infrastructure, and companies seeking to modernize, secure, or develop digital systems. Through research, development, and technology transfer projects, SPIN contributes its expertise and supports partners in implementing digital innovations in a sovereign and trustworthy manner.
