Launch of the CleanFeed Research Project
With CleanFeed, a new collaborative research project has been launched in April 2026 that focuses on strengthening trust and transparency in digital media, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). The goal is to make the origin and authenticity of audiovisual content traceable across the entire media chain – including editing, redistribution, and streaming.
Together with its project partners Deutsche Welle, castlabs, and G&L, Fraunhofer FOKUS is developing practical technical solutions for “media provenance” and investigating how relevant trust information can be presented in a way that is understandable to different groups of people: on the one hand, for media consumers to enable transparent classification of content, and on the other hand, for editorial teams and other professional stakeholders to efficiently and systematically incorporate trust considerations already during media production.
Strengthening cyber resilience is firmly established as a goal and strategic priority of the German federal government: in the strategic research field of security and defense research within the High-Tech Agenda Germany, as well as in the BMFTR’s recently published key issues paper on cybersecurity research. The BMFTR's new grant initiative is therefore titled “Disinformation – Recognize. Understand. Defend.“
