Talk: Keynote “The open media decade has transformed video consumption – what will come next?”, Day 1, 9:15-10:00
For more than a decade John Simmons has led Microsoft’s effort to make commercial video fully interoperable on the Web. Begun in 2007, the Microsoft "Athens" project, an industry-wide collaboration, resulted in a DRM-interoperable encoding standard (proposed 2009, published 2012), a video streaming standard, Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH, 2012), the HTML5 Encrypted Media Extensions (proposed 2012, published 2017) and Media Source Extensions (proposed 2012, published 2016), an Apple-Microsoft proposed global encoding standard for low-latency, live and on-demand video streaming, the Common Media Application Format - (CMAF, proposed 2015, published 2018), and a global industry project to standardize the use of CMAF with HTML5 for television streaming - the CTA Web Application Video Ecosystem project (CTA WAVE; 2016).
