Dr. Ruben Merz

Ruben is a 5G system architect at Swisscom and a senior engineer in the mobile access innovation team.

Since 2016, he is at the forefront of the development of 5G at Swisscom. He was the the project lead of the initial 5G activity at Swisscom and is now the system architect within the Swisscom 5G program.

Fueled by a strong curiosity, a passion for learning and a technology-first mindset, his expertise centers on wireless and mobile networking, with an emphasis on architecture, systems, measurements, and performance evaluation. From 2015 to 2017, Ruben was also pursuing a part-time management education program, and completed a master of advanced studies in management, technology & economics at ETH Zürich (MAS MTEC). His focus was on innovation and strategic management.

Ruben keeps a foot in the research universe. He is a member of the IEEE Infocom TPC since 2014 (distinguished member 2015 to 2017), of ACM CoNext in 2012 and 2013, of ACM Mobihoc in 2015 and of the ACM All Things Cellular Workshop in 2016. His full list of publications is available here.

Prior to joining Swisscom in 2012, he was a senior research scientist in the Internet Network Architecture group of (Deutsche) Telekom Innovation Laboratories in Berlin, Germany. He earned his PhD and MSc in Communication Systems from the School of Computer and Communication Systems at EPFL.
