Preparing Industry Verticals for Edge Computing, Network Slicing & 5G

5G technologies and infrastructures have rapidly evolved in the past years and several application use cases have been identified and explored in early trials. Now, as first 5G standards have been released, the first commercial products become available and initial 5G deployments are happening in the US and Asia. It is about time to focus on the impact of 5G within the progressing digitalization of various industries in Europe. In particular, the concept of network slicing has been addressed in-depth during the last months by industry alliances for various industries, such as manufacturing, automotive, energy, and media, demonstrating the potentialities of network virtualization.

This year´s edition of the FOKUS FUSECO Forum continues the very successful international event series in its ninth year, bringing together international key experts from various industry sectors to discuss the opportunities and challenges of emerging 5G-related information and communication technologies, such as cyber-physical systems, new radio access networks, edge computing, network virtualization, analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, within various key industry sectors in the emerging digital world.

During these two days and together with leading operators, manufacturers, integrators, and solution providers we want to understand and assess 5G-related technologies, infrastructures, and their use in various business sectors enabling innovative business models, value chains, productivity gains, and new revenue opportunities. In addition, we want to look at the challenges of 5G rollout, legacy interworking, and migration.

This year's forum will feature four dedicated tracks consisting of one tutorial and interactive workshops on the first day, namely:

DAY 1

Track 1: 5G System Technologies

Chairs: Dr. Marius Corici, Fraunhofer FOKUS, Germany & Bruno Chatras, Orange, France

  • Part 1: Tutorial on "5G Networks: Understanding the 5G System as Flexible & Automated Software Network"
  • Part 2: "5G System Technologies Workshop: Network Functions and Virtualization System"

Track 2: 5G Verticals I: Vertical Enablement in 5G
Chairs: Michele Zarri, GSMA, UK & Dr. Luigi Licciardi, 5GSA, Italy & Prof. Thomas Magedanz, Fraunhofer FOKUS, Germany

Track 3a: Architectures and Radio Technologies for 5G Transport and Access Networks
Chairs: Prof. Eckhard Grass, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany & Dr. Valerio Frascolla, Intel, Germany

Track 3b: 5G Verticals II: Media and 5G
Chairs: Dr. Stefan Arbanowski & Dr. Stephan Steglich, Fraunhofer FOKUS, Germany & N.N.

Track 4: Getting 5G-Ready: Testbeds & Rollouts
Chairs: Dr. Stefan Covaci, Fraunhofer FOKUS, Germany & Jean-Pierre Bienaimé, 5G-IA, Belgium & Dr. Ashutosh Dutta, AT&T, USA

Workshop supported by 5GIA and IEEE 5G

DAY 2

The second day features a full-day conference uniting these topics under one umbrella:

Making Industry Verticals 5G-Ready: From First 5G Standards Towards 5G Products and Solutions

  • Session 1: Verticals as 5G Drivers
  • Session 2: 5G Enablers: Network Slicing & Customized Networks
  • Session 3: Towards 5G: Standards Update, Migration & Interworking
  • Session 4: 5G Getting Real: Testbeds and Trials

As usual we will show the newest prototypes developed within the 5G Playground, but this year we will also show first demos of the 5G-ready infrastructure in the streets of Berlin. The FOKUS 5G-Ready Trial Platform, which was developed in 2017 to demonstrate edge computing and network slicing in 5G, has been connected to various real mobile access networks and forms today an integral part of the 5G Berlin testbed.
