Project on the environmental impact of streaming wins award at IBC 2024

News from Sep. 25, 2024

The “Corporate Star Awards” were presented at IBC 2024. The “Ecoflow” project won in the category “Best Carbon Footprint Improvement Initiative”. Fraunhofer FOKUS contributed its experience from the “Green Streaming” project to the initiative. In this project, scientists are researching technologies and solutions for energy-efficient and sustainable video streaming.

With the increasing range of video streaming services on the internet, the topics of energy efficiency and sustainability in streaming are also attracting more and more attention. In the “Green Streaming” project, Fraunhofer FOKUS is investigating the streaming chain of effects and attempting to analyse and optimise all components – from the A/V encoder to content delivery networks and end devices. The scientists also use machine learning and artificial intelligence. The aim is to achieve sustainable operation of the streaming infrastructure and environmentally friendly use of streaming content.

The scientists at FOKUS were also able to contribute the experience gained from the project to the “IBC Accelerator Program” initiative. In the “Ecoflow” project, the partners investigated how standardised methods for measuring the energy consumption of streaming services can be established. The aim is to identify energy-saving opportunities throughout the technology supply chain and provide viable solutions.

We are delighted to receive the award together with our project partners accedo, HNR, BBC, itv, BITMOVIN, RTL Nederlands, QUANTEEC, cognizant, IET, Greening of Streaming, DIMPACT and EBU.
