WiBACK and Servario connect new regions to the data highway

News from June 26, 2014

The inadequate high-speed internet connectivity prevalent in the rural district of Graftschaft Bentheim and the town of Nordhorn is to change through the cooperation of Fraunhofer FOKUS and the IT Company Servario GmbH. Since early June the region is being supplied with wireless broad-band WiBACK, a technology developed by the Fraunhofer FOKUS.

Fast and cost effective internet connections are now a days a decisive location factor for the economy. Where such connectivity is missing, a competitive disadvantage for the economy arises and the quality of life of the population suffers. In Germany this applies to almost 60% of the population, since in rural areas with less than 50,000 inhabitants, high-capacity broad-band connections are virtually nonexistent. The rural district of Graftschaft Bentheim and the town of Nordhorn belong to such communities. The inadequate high-speed internet connectivity prevalent there is to change through the cooperation of Fraunhofer FOKUS and the IT Company Servario GmbH. Since early June the region is being supplied with wireless broad-band WiBACK, a technology developed by the Fraunhofer FOKUS.

So far WiBACK was implemented in test networks at the Fraunhofer-Institute in Bonn and in Africa, the first commercial usage was already demonstrated in Italy. In connecting the Lower Saxony region, WiBACK will be used for the first time commercially in Germany. In the future there are already plans for expansion into the rest of Germany that are already emerging today.

Unlike alternative technologies, WiBACK is an auto-configuring and self-management system that distinguishes itself especially through the low investment cost and low running costs. It can be seamlessly integrated with existing networks and functions as a wireless backhaul-solution based on point to point radio links through two components the WiBACK-Controler that centrally manages the network and a number of WiBACK-Nodes that transmit radio signals and local access possible. Through the Node-Network remote areas located more than 100 Km. away can be connected with a bandwidth of up to 180 Mbps. Servario will not only be the first IT Company in Germany to implement the WiBACK Technology but also in future it will produce the hardware components in Nordhorn. The next expansion of the technology is planned for the regions of Obergrafschaft and Niedergrafschaft.
