CEO, Edge Broker GmbH, Germany

Juliane Müller is CEO and Founder of the Edge Broker GmbH and master student in embedded systems design at the Hochschule Bremerhaven. In the course of her bachelor thesis at the Fraunhofer Institute for Medical Image Computing MEVIS she discovered her interest for software development. After finishing her bachelor course in medical engineering she worked for the IIT Software GmbH as software developer where the idea for an IoT edge computing startup evolved. She then started her master course and had almost at the same time the opportunity to realize her startup idea, the Edge Broker GmbH. She is now developing Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for industrial domains with focus on automatic cloud provisioning and real-time streaming analytics.

Edge Broker - Handling Time-Sensitive Data at the Edge

Abstract

The main argument for performing data analysis of process data using cloud solutions is convenience. This choice generally wastes resources and is impractical for time-sensitive data. Furthermore, integrating end-user interactions into the infrastructure is often times a complex task, hindered by the extra cloud layer.

Cloud solutions scale well, which is why larger analysis procedures should be performed within the cloud infrastructure. The trade-off challenge between edge computing for small-scale time-sensitive data and large-scale computing of time-insensitive data does not yet have established solutions.

Edge Broker automates cloud provisioning and provides real-time streaming analytics as well as device controlling, thereby circumventing the cloud where edge solutions provide a higher benefit. The solution offers a smooth and simple transition from edge to cloud. Administration tasks can be performed through a universal web interface, as well as data analysis, managing client connections, and controlling the devices.
