David Bermbach is Assistant Professor at TU Berlin and the Einstein Center Digital Future where he has been heading the Mobile Cloud Computing research group since December 2017. Prior to this, he was a senior researcher at TU Berlin and a researcher at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). He has a diploma in business engineering (2010) and a PhD with distinction in computer science (2014) both from KIT. David's research is on geo-distributed systems and applications in contexts such as cloud, edge, and fog computing.

Going beyond unit test for fog and edge applications, e.g., integration tests but also benchmarking, is challenging as this requires access to a suitable runtime infrastructure. For cloud applications, this is trivial – simply launch another set of VMs. Especially small edge nodes, however, will either not exist, e.g., in early design phases, or will be fully used in production. Maintaining a separate testing infrastructure or extra capacity at edge nodes is prohibitively expensive and often hard to manage.

In this talk, we will give an overview of our ongoing work on MockFog which tries to emulate edge and fog environments in the cloud. Applications running on MockFog experience a realistic fog-like environment which is achieved through careful manipulation of network characteristics and VM resources. Through the same mechanisms, developers can also test fault-tolerance and resilience of their applications.
