Giovanni Romano

Giovanni Romano is currently coordinating TIM activities on technical standards related to radio access and spectrum. The role implies the identification of requirements to be transferred to standardisation fora such as 3GPP to define new technical solutions for the radio interfaces of GSM, UMTS, LTE, 5G/IMT2020 and their evolutions, and the evaluation of technical solutions under development.

In October 2016 Giovanni was nominated Alternate Board Director, representing TIM in NGMN. He is also Board "Champion" for the NGMN 5G Ecosystem Focus Area.

Since 1996 Giovanni has been active in several international standardisation fora and he is currently attending 3GPP RAN and NGMN. He is also coordinating the exchange of information between 3GPP and ITU-R.

Giovanni served as Vice-Chairman of 3GPP Technical Specification Group RAN for the period 2013-2017.

Until 2005 Giovanni was project leader of several activities within the R&D center of Telecom Italia, including UMTS performance evaluation, quality of service verification, standardisation, field trials and testing.


Enabling Verticals in TIM 5G Network

The presentation focuses on TIM’s pre-commercial field trials and highlights the need to work together with Verticals to exploit 5G ecosystem. Moreover, starting from different 5G use cases, the document indicates the collaborations TIM is undergoing and provides some information on the auction to allocate 5G spectrum in Italy.
