On monday, the first county in the south of Hesse, Darmstadt-Dieburg, gets connected with the early warning system KATWARN. District Administrator Klaus Peter Schellhaas activated the information system for the public in the control center of fire department and civil protection. KATWARN is developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems (Berlin). "With KATWARN we now have the opportunity to inform via SMS or e-mail the public about disasters and communicate what immediate action should be taken," the District Administrator explained in Dieburg. As a text message with the keyword "KATWARN" and his own postal code, registering for the price of one SMS is possible from now on. Afterwards warnings will come free of charge via SMS on the mobile or by e-mail to an address stored.

"KATWARN" supplements the existing warning systems. Information via radio and television, as well as voice messages on site will remain, said District Administrator Schellhaas. The warnings are issued by the control center in Dieburg in close consultation with the county and the respective municipality.
