Fraunhofer FOKUS in Chile

Professor Dr. Radu Popescu-Zeletin, Director of Fraunhofer FOKUS, was awarded the “National Senats Medal” in Santiago de Chile. The award was granted during a ceremony in the building of the Chilean Congress. FOKUS will inaugurate the Innovation Center InnoCity in Santiago de Chile on October 1st. Collaborating with representatives of industry, science and politics FOKUS intends to develop technologies for the “Smart City” in order to face prospective challenges in the field of energy, eMobility, public security, eHealth and eGovernment.

Federal Minister Anette Schavan and the representative of the Chilean ministry of economics will both attend the opening of InnoCity on 1st of October.

In mid-August, prior to the opening of the innovation center, Prof. Popescu-Zeletin visited Santiago de Chile and Valparaiso and met up with decision makers from economy and politics. So one of the sessions of the Chilean senate’s Commission for Energy and Environment focused on Germany’s experience and approach regarding the energy transition and the growing usage of renewable energies. Prof. Zeletin emphasized the key role of ICT based solutions and described the German respectively European situation in the energy sector. The event was chaired by Senator Isabel Allende and Senator Antonio Horvath.

Prof. Zeletin was accompanied by Jens Fromm, head of the Secure eIdentity-Lab FOKUS, Dr. Wolfgang Schuch, General Manager for Fraunhofer Chile Research – Center for Systems Biotechnology, and Mr. Luis Stein, Business Development Director Designate for Fraunhofer FOKUS in Chile.
