Mr. Moeller is Head of the Institutional and European Programmes Office within the Directorate of Telecommunications and Integrated Applications, at ESA Headquarters in Paris:
He has been with ESA since 25 years and was closely associated with the establishment of the Copernicus Earth Observation Programme as Head of the Space Segment Office.
Since 2013, Mr. Moeller is responsible for the co-operation between the ESA ARTES Programme (Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems) and related R&D and Programme initiatives of the EU institutions. This includes ESA’s preparations for SATCOM and 5G and in-orbit validation programmes in cooperation with the European Commission. .
He holds a Master in Telecommunications following studies at TU Darmstadt and Ecole Nationale Superieure des Telecommunications in Paris.
ESA supporting SATCOM/5G and considerations for In-orbit demonstrations
Satellite communications represent the leading revenue stream of the global space industry and is highly commercial. The sector is faced with trends towards new services and the emergence of mega-constellations represent a potential game-changer. ESA is supporting the SATCOM industry competitiveness including product developments and large scale Public-Private Partnership programmes. A number of ESA 5G R&D activities are ongoing such as on terminals and antennas. A new ESA PPP can provide a vehicle in support to the in-orbit validation and demonstration for 5G. A SATCOM/5G demonstration element of a future 5G Trial Roadmap is considered including complementary partners and potential co-funding schemes. A number of candidate use cases are being assessed to best demonstrate the benefit of SATCOM for 5G. ESA confirms its aims to further support the satellite convergence in 5G and fast IOV/IOD and deployment of 5G and to help raise an increased level of support to meet the market demand for competitive solutions.
