Dr. Fumio Watanabe

KDDI Research Inc., Chairman, Japan

Dr. Watanabe has 40 years of experience in research and development of satellite and mobile communication systems including IMT-2000, IMT-Advanced, WiMAX and 5G. He has been active for a long time in international standardization of mobile communication systems in ITU-R.

He joined KDD in 1980. He was an Executive Director, General Manager of KDDI from 2006 responsible for mobile radio access networks and R&D activities. He is now the Chairman of KDDI Research Inc. He is also CTO of UQ Communications Inc. and the President of KDDI Foundation.

He received Piero Fanti International Prize in 1989, the R & D Awards of Radio Systems in 1991, the meritorious Awards on ITU activities in 2001, the Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education in 2010, and Maejima memorial Awards in 2013, respectively. He is the chairman of Broadband Wireless Access Committee in ARIB. He is a Fellow of IEIEC.

Abstract 1 (Day 1, Workshop 1/Session 1)

Experiences from 5G Access Trials in Japan

The development of the “5G” mobile system is pushed forward all over the world for a service launch of about 2020 as a target. 5G will be used for more diverse purposes. One of the goals is “Enhanced mobile broadband” providing several Gbps throughput, which is about 10-100 times faster than the current 4G. It is likely to use frequency bands higher than existing bands to have wider bandwidth for high throughput services. How efficiently use such high frequency for full mobile services is one of the key topics.

This presentation will introduce 5G system field trials using 28GHz band. It shows successful hand over between scanning tracking beams under 200km/h mobile speed and the maximum user throughput of 13Gbps more.

Abstract 2 (Day 2, Session 2)

5G System Development and Use-Case Trials

Mobile communications service are widely penetrating to all the society as the key infrastructure. The development of the “5G” mobile system is pushed forward all over the world for a service launch of about 2020 as a target. 5G will be used for more diverse purposes not only for “Enhanced mobile broadband” but also “Massive-machine type communication” and “Ultra-reliable and low latency communication”. It necessary to investigate usage scenario of 5G in parallel to system development.

This presentation outlines the system development on leading-edge 5G and introduce several use case trials with partners.
