How the Internet of Things changes Mobile Networks
News from June 08, 2011
An example here is the increasing number of connected cars communicating to services in the network, opening new business models for network operators and service providers, but also to governmental institutions.
Application domains reach from connected sensors for Smart Cities over Body Area Networks for eHealth to security and surveilance in the public sector. Thus, existing mobile networks are not ready for massive M2M communication.
The Fraunhofer FOKUS OpenMTC (Machine Type Communication) is the answer to that dilemma. By analysing and re-engineering state-of-the-art technologies and architectures from ETSI and 3GPP like the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), the OpenMTC forms the missing link to an efficient M2M communication paradigm.
The OpenMTC is going to complement the OpenIMS and OpenEPC suites for mobile M2M communication.
