Telenor Digital, Software Telco. Norway
Bjørn Remseth is the tech lead for the software telco activity in Telenor Digital’s Strategy&Innovation department. He has a Cand. Scient. degree in computer science from the University of Oslo. He has worked in the search engine industry and startups before joining Telenor in 2001.
Telenor Group has mobile operations in 13 markets in the Nordic region, Europe and in Asia. Headquartered in Norway, Telenor Group is one of the world’s major mobile operators serving over 200 million mobile subscriptions every day and with an ambition to deliver digital experiences to even more.
Remseth joined Telenor as senior systems architect before joining Telenor Research as a research scientist and a founding member of the “innovation labs” group that has later been transformed through many steps into today’s Telenor Digital. Telenor Digital is today leading Telenor’s global research & development efforts into a digitized telco future. Today Remseth is tech lead for the “software telco” activity where Telenor under the working name “loltel” is building a full core network infrastructure designed from the bottom up for rapid experimentation and innovation. Loltel is running on hybrid cloud (both private and public) and utilises several open source components. The Loltel operator has now been operational for close to two years but with a limited and experimental subscriber base. In 2017 the plan is to perform a commercial trial, and then to evaluate the possibility of future expansion.
Loltel, the software telco: Where we are near the end of 2016, and where we’re going.
Since the project start in 2013 Telenor Digital has designed and implemented a core network connected to Telenor Norway’s radio network via the MVNO interface. The core network is fully virtualised, running in a hybrid cloud (public and private) and has been operational for experimental use since early 2015. The software telco was designed from the bottom up to facilitate service innovation, and we have created several experimental services since we became operational. We are now preparing for the next phase which is small scale commercial operation. Our aim is to start doing that in 2017. Depending on the results of that trial we will determine how to take the software telco forward. In this talk all of these aspects, past, present and future will be discussed.
