CeBIT 2012: Fraunhofer FIRST and Frontier Silicon join forces to foster TPEG services for the digital radio

A showcase application demonstrates the greater functionality that will be available after the impending transition to the significantly more powerful TPEG via DAB+.

While conventional navigation systems are quite limited in getting the user quickly from point A to point B, the next generation of digital helpers will deliver complete and current information, provide reliable forecasts of traffic development and offer additional technologies such as seamless navigation. This is made possible by the TPEG coding standard (Transport Protocol Experts Group). TPEG is the enabling technology for a new generation of traffic information services that are distributed through digital channels. Because of its small demand on transmission bandwidth it is particularly well-suited for digital broadcasting (DAB, DRM, DVBx). Fraunhofer FIRST and Frontier Silicon are cooperating on developing components to facilitate the reception of TPEG services via digital broadcasting (DAB+). A showcase application demonstrates the greater functionality that will be available after the impending transition from RDS-TMC via FM radio to the significantly more powerful TPEG via DAB+.

Prototype hardware was equipped with a Frontier Silicon DAB+ module capable of streaming broadcast TPEG data using AUTODAB1.0 software. For receiving, decoding and managing TPEG-Data Fraunhofer’s TPEG Client-Kit was implemented. The Kit facilitates management of TPEG messages with little memory requirements and makes them available to subsequent applications. At CeBIT the partners will demonstrate their TPEG monitoring app based on Android. It collects incoming TPEG messages and visualizes them on an interactive map. Additional information on the respective messages can be viewed by clicking on them. Innovative navigation solutions are made possible through GPS localization.

Fraunhofer FIRST

Fraunhofer FIRST is part of Europe’s leading research organization Fraunhofer Society. The institute develops innovative methods and technologies for embedded systems and advises companies during the entire development process: from modeling, architecture and quality control to the completed product. As a specialist for emerging technologies Fraunhofer FIRST started exploring TPEG-Technologies several years ago and is a member of the standardization committee TISA. FIRST is offering a TPEG Client-Kit for the reception and utilization of coded TPEG messages. The software package is especially well-suited for mobile devices or embedded systems with limited resources (low cost/low energy) and can be licensed from Fraunhofer.
