Cloud for Europe kicks-off

Release from Thu., July 04, 2013

Cloud Computing is becoming an accepted and widely utilised technology both for private and public organisations. The CloudforEurope Project addresses the objectives of the European Cloud Partnership and offers partners the opportunity to determine how to adopt a well-defined European Cloud Computing Strategy for the Public Sector.

The CloudforEurope Project has commenced and over the course of three years will build trust in European cloud computing by applying pre-commercial procurement (PCP) as an instrument for industry innovation and simultaneously enhance cloud adoption in the public sector. The Project is funded by the European Commission under its  7th Framework Programme (FP7) for Research and Innovation and brings together 24 partners from 11 countries.

Prof. Radu Popescu-Zeletin, Director Fraunhofer FOKUS [4], said: “Fraunhofer FOKUS is proud to be the project coordinator of this major initiative to build a trustworthy European cloud market. We strongly believe in the necessity of cloud services that meet the needs of public administrations in Europe. ”

Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the European Commission, said: "If we seize the opportunity, cloud computing could give the European economy a boost worth up to €250bn a year. And the benefits for the public sector are particularly promising – offering citizens services that are better, more integrated and more effective, at less cost. So I particularly welcome the CloudforEurope initiative, which can boost the uptake of the cloud in the public sector."

CloudforEurope will give a clear view on the public sector requirements and usage scenarios for cloud computing. Supported by stakeholders from all sectors, the main objectives of CloudforEurope are to remove the obstacles for cloud adoption and to jointly identify the requirements from different public organisations beyond national borders.

Pre-commercial procurement for services will follow the scoping of those requirements that are identified as missing, or need to be adopted for government use. CloudforEurope will also establish suitable contractual terms and conditions for future cloud procurements. The results of the work and lessons learnt will be published for re-use of the PCP instrument.

The Launch Conference for CloudforEurope will take place on November 14 and 15 in Berlin, Germany.
