                      Next Generation Network Infrastructures

The FOKUS competence center Next Generation Network Infrastructures (NGNI) provides the expertise and technologies for rapidly prototyping smart and seamless multimedia applications enabled by Open Service Delivery Platforms (SDPs) on top of heterogeneous fixed and mobile Next Generation Networks (NGNs). Taking advantage of our experiences gained in the fields of fixed mobile convergence and telecoms and internet convergence, as well as from active research in the fields of the Future Internet (FI), namely the Internet of Services (IoS) and the Internet of Things (IoT), the competence center NGNI is nowadays focussing on the progressing convergence of human to human and machine to machine communications within emerging Smart City infrastructures. In this regard, the globally recognised NGNI testbed toolkits, such as OpenIMS Core, Open EPC, Open MTC, as well as the FOKUS Broker, are building the foundation for prototyping various Smart City applications, such as Smart Power Grids, eMobility, eHealth, and eGovernment.

WebRTC is the upcoming HTML5 standard enabling real-time communications in web browsers. We have set up an environment for establishing multimedia session between WebRTC users based on the latest drafts in standardization. This emerging technology is integrated into the FOKUS Broker enabling interoperability between Browser applications and telecommunication capabilities of NGNs.

On April 04, 2012 the 6th Workshop Next Generation Service Delivery Platform (NG SDP) was organized in Berlin, Germany. Around 40 workshop participants discussed the topic of "M2M impacts on SDP Evolution". A live demonstration of the OpenMTC platform was shown during the lunch break. The demo features the ETSI TC M2M specified generic communication (GC), application enablement (AE), and reachability addressing and repository (RAR) service capabilities on both the network and the gateway service capability layer (N/GSCL). More insights into those features are included in the presentation given during the workshop session.
