Thomas Magedanz (PhD) is professor of the chair for Next Generation Networks (AV - Architektur der Vermittlungsknoten in German) in the electrical engineering and computer sciences faculty of the Technische Universität Berlin, Germany, where he is educating masters and PhD students in the fields of multimedia Service Delivery Platform technologies on top of converging fixed and mobile networks, Next Generation Networks, and the Future Internet.
In addition, he leads the Next Generation Network Infrastructures (NGNI) Competence Center at Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS (formerly known as GMD Institute FOKUS) in Berlin, Germany, where he is responsible for the performance of major international R&D co-operations and related projects in the context of next generation telecommunications infrastructures. In this context he is a globally recognized pioneer of the development and delivery of advanced network and service technology testbeds and related software tools in the fields of Next Generation Networks and the emerging Future Internet for both academia and industry. Well known examples include the Open IMS Playground and the Open SOA Telco Playground.
Prof. Magedanz has been carrying out pioneering research and teaching globally recognized education courses for masters, diploma and PhD students in the field of converging fixed and mobile telecommunications, the Internet and information technologies for over 20 years. In this context he has initiated and managed numerous national and international R&D projects centered around Next Generation Service Delivery Platforms on top of both legacy and Next Generation Networks based on worldwide recognized technology testbeds.
He received his diploma and his Ph.D. in computer sciences from the Technische Universität Berlin, Germany, in 1988 and 1993, respectively. In 2000 he finished his postdoctoral lecture qualification in Applied Computer Sciences at the Technische Universität Berlin.
In 1989 he was the first research associate at the department for Open Communication Systems (OKS) at the Technische Universität Berlin and helped to set up the chair. After his PhD he became assistant professor and continued his education and research activities with a strong focus on distributed computing and telecommunications. Alongside his employment as a university lecturer and researcher he has been involved in several international strategic studies and research projects related to Intelligent Networks, Telecommunications Management Systems, Personal/Mobile Communications, TINA/Next Generation IN, and Mobile Agents / mobile Middleware within Deutsche Telekom AG, EURESCOM and the European RACE / ACTS / IST research programs.
From 1996 - 1998 he chaired the “Intelligent Communication Environments” research department at the GMD Research Center for Open Communication Systems (FOKUS, an institute of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft now), where he was responsible for several projects dealing with the evolution of Service Delivery Platforms in the most recent IT applications, namely IN, TINA, CORBA, J2EE, Intelligent/Mobile Agents. He also led the development of the globally recognized Grasshopper Mobile Agent Platform.
In 2002 Thomas Magedanz became a full university professor in the electrical engineering and computer sciences faculty at the Technische Universität Berlin, Germany, leading the new chair for Next Generation Networks (AV - Architektur der Vermittlungsknoten in German), sponsored by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, where he is concentrating on teaching masters and PhD students and performing special lectures and project courses in the field of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) based Service Delivery Platforms for converged media and communications services on top of Next Generation Networks.
In addition, he acts as managing director of the Next Generation Network Infrastructures (NGNI) competence center of the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS, which also provides various testbeds and tools in the context of Next Generation Networks and Open Converged Service Delivery Environments. The most popular ones include the Open IMS Playground established in 2004 and the Open Source IMS Core System (www.openimscore.org) published in 2005. In 2007 he opened the new Open SOA Telco Playground for IMS/SDP/Web 2.0/SOA service prototyping and supported the setup of the FOKUS Media Interoperability Laboratory for interactive community IMS/IPTV and converged multimedia services.
In 2006, Prof. Magedanz was assigned the title of extraordinary professor in the department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Built Enviroment and Information Technology at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He is also visiting professor at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa.
In 2007 Prof. Magedanz joined the European FIRE (Future Internet Research and Experimentation) expert group giving guidance/directions for a service oriented Future Internet development.
He has also been visiting professor at the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Computing at the Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT), Cork Road, Waterford, Ireland / Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG, personal web page at TSSG) since 2007.
Since November 2008 Prof. Magedanz holds an unlimited permanent professorship at the Technische Universität Berlin, Germany, sponsored by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
From 1998-2002 Prof. Magedanz was Chief Technical Officer of the IKV++ Technologies AG, located in Berlin, Germany, where he led the development of advanced telecommunications middleware products and mobile portal platforms. IKV++ Technologies AG is a globally known spin-off company from Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS and provides professional services, solutions and platform products for the mobile telecommunications and M-Business markets.
From 1995-1998 he was department leader of the Intelligent Communications Environments (ICE) Competence Center at the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS, in Berlin, Germany, where he guided the development of personal communications systems and the mobile agent platform Grasshopper.
In addition, Prof. Magedanz acted from 1993-2003 as associate professor at the computer sciences faculty of the Technische Universität Berlin, with a focus on middleware technologies and advanced telecommunications service architectures. During his professional career he has managed several R&D telecommunications projects (EURESCOM, ACTS, IST).
Since July 2002 Prof. Magedanz led the national German 3Gbeyond Test- and Development center. In addition he has been an on demand consultant and technology coach for telecommunications networks and Service Delivery Platforms (IN, CAMEL, OSA, Parlay, SIP, CORBA, Java, etc.) for different vendors, operators and international conference organizers (IIR, Informa, marcus evans, Osney Media, IQCP, Euroforum, etc.).
Prof. Magedanz is a member of the IEEE, board member of several journals and conferences, and the author of more than 200 technical papers/articles related to Intelligent Networks and mobile telecommunications middleware. He has been working on telecommunications middleware for more than fifteen years and he is thus an internationally recognized expert in this area. He is the author of the first international book on Intelligent Networks, published in 1996, is co-editor of several special issues related to telecommunications in international journals (IEEE, Elsevier, Kluwer, etc.) and is a regularly invited tutorial speaker at major international telecommunications events and conferences. He is known for his comprehensive investigations and “easy to digest” presentations style. He also gives on-demand on-site seminars as well as consulting on telecommunications middleware related topics for different operators and vendors.
