The evolution of the Next Generation Mobile Network towards an all-IP network infrastructure required a new evolution in the management of the data traffic of the mobile devices. Fraunhofer FOKUS NGNI has supported an extensive research on the resource reservation and charging issues starting with the policy and charging architecture for the Next Generation Networks.
With the evolution of the Next Generation Mobile Network towards a broadband wireless environment, it is expected that the mobile devices will exchange more data information compared to a model where mostly voice communication drives load on the network, including machine-2-machine communication. In order to face the new challenges in the emerging Next Generation Mobile Network architecture to the data dominant wireless environment, NGNI has developed and extended components for the policy based resource reservation (PoCCA) including subscription based resource management, QoS authorization and session binding.
In order to further reduce the operational costs of the wireless core network and to be able to further adapt the resources to the requirements of the various services of the users, the research on resource management of NGNI includes the development of new concepts and solutions for:
As the further evolution of the network architecture is expected to become a more flat and de-centralized one in which a major part of the data exchange will be done through the usage of e.g. femtocells, NGNI research is now concentrating also on the future development of policy-based local offload of IP traffic and flow-based routing optimizations in the operator IP network.
