The evolution of Next Generation Networks required an evolution in the mobility management support especially when multiple access networks of various technologies are sustained by the same network provider. Fraunhofer FOKUS has supported an extensive research on the mobility related issues starting with service mobility support for Fixed Mobile Convergence and end-to-end multimedia service continuity in the IMS architecture.
With the increasing establishment of the wireless access network technologies, dense wireless environments, in which the mobile devices are able to exchange data over more than one access network at specific locations, will become a reality. In order to face the new challenges in the emerging Next Generation Mobile Network architecture we are developing and extending components for both user mobility management in the area of access network discovery and selection and network mobility management in the area of network located mobility management.
In order to reduce the operational costs of the network providers and to be able to offer the Always Best Connected (ABC) feature to the mobile devices, the research of mobility management of Fraunhofer FOKUS includes the development of new concepts and solutions for:
Recognizing the further evolution of the network routing architecture towards a more flat and de-centralized one, NGNI research is now concentrating also on the further development of mobility management and support in such architectures as a network provided support service to ensure a seamless and reliable communication.
