Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Communication
The internet economy currently grows with an average of 12% per year (Status 2011) and outperforms most, if not all other branches of the european business areas. The “Internet of Things” esp. the field of M2M communication is thereby one of the driving factors in the internet growth. Estimations predict about three orders of magnitude more terminals involved in M2M communication than in Human-to-human communication by the year 2020.M2M Communication is present in different segments of today’s life and business. Mainly in the automotive area, where we already see strong initiatives to make cars a mobile device ... also in terms of communication. Services, like In-Car Multimedia, Car Data Analysis or Traffic Flow and General Situation and Location based Information Services (Where is the closest gas station?) are forming a new environment of experience in the vehicular area.
Other important areas of M2M Communication are Security (Surveilance, Physical Access Control), Payment/Money Transfer, Tracking/Tracing of Objects, Healthcare (e.g. Body Sensors), Public Sector (SmartCities, SmartEnergy), Consumer Electronics, Metering, and Remote Maintenance/Control.
