IPv6 Contest 2010

The German IPv6 Council invites applications for the International IPv6 Application Contest 2010.The objectives of this contest are the generation of ideas and applications, which help determine how to introduce IPv6, the internet of the next generation, on a large scale and use it effectively. The contest also provides an opportunity for the next generation of application developers to gain experience with IPv6.

Abstract:
Projects of the Future Internet Research & Experimentation (FIRE) initiative are building an experimental facility that shall serve the needs of Future Internet research and development. The main design principles are virtualization of resources and federation. Federation is a means to meet requirements from Future Internet research that cannot be met by individual testbeds. In particular, to support large scale experiments utilizing heterogeneous resources, a federation of experimental facilities is needed. While several initiatives are currently establishing large scale testbeds, the mechanisms for federating such environments across the boundaries of administrative domains are unclear. This is due to the lack of established and agreed federation models, methods, and operational procedures. In this article we propose a federation model that defines high level conceptual entities for federating resources across administrative domains. A first prototype implementation of the functional components derived from the model has been realized and evaluated. This is demonstrated by the discussion of use cases that depict the flexibility of the proposed approach. The model can guide future testbed developments and harmonize the currently scattered efforts across several FIRE projects in order to establish an agreed resource federation framework. This framework shall be the basis for Future Internet research and experimentation in Europe and provide experimental facility services to academia and industry.

Paper accepted for TridentCom 2010

The paper “Interoperability in Heterogeneous Resource Federations” authored by Konrad Campowsky, Thomas Magedanz, and Sebastian Wahle has been accepted at the International Conference on Testbeds and Research Infrastructures for the Development of Networks & Communities (TridentCom 2010). Publication is scheduled for May 2010 by ICST/Springer.

Paper Abstract:
Currently, a number of research activities worldwide focus on resource federations to enable remote access and large scale experiments. With the global efforts in sharing experimental facility resources across organizational boundaries, interoperability issues are becoming increasingly important. To this end, this paper describes a model that defines the necessary entities for inter resource federation scenarios. The model is then discussed by means of a concrete use case federating Panlab and PlanetLab resources. In this respect Panlab and PlanetLab are considered to be federations themselves. Our findings show that the two approaches can be matched following the general model. This allows for federating resources not only across the boundaries of administrative (organizational) domains but even across the boundaries of federations. Those federations in themselves provide collections of resources offered by several administrative domains and use different control frameworks to enable resource access and management.

Paper Abstract:
Several projects worldwide offer experimental facilities to enable large scale research experiments. PlanetLab as one of the first initiatives in this field, currently consists of 1021 network nodes forming a global research network. On the other hand, Panlab offers a wide range of heterogeneous resources ranging from hardware devices to dedicated software. The broad field of Future Internet research requires such diverse infrastructures that serve different needs across domains and layers. Federation between different experimental facilities is foreseen to address those requirements as single testbeds cannot offer the full range of technologies that are required by the Future Internet community. This paper outlines an approach of federating Panlab resources with PlanetLab and vice versa. A prototype implementation is described and evaluated. Also, we present a case study to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed system.

The AIMS 2010 conference is a single-track event integrating conference paper sessions, tutorials, keynotes, and a PhD student workshop into a highly interactive event. One of the goals of AIMS is to look beyond borders and to stimulate the exchange of ideas across different communities and among PhD students. Furthermore, AIMS 2010 collocates the International Summer School in Network and Service Management (ISSNSM 2010).
