Vision

The Internet is one of the most important communication platforms of our times. It is impossible to imagine daily life without it, and it fascinates us with continual new applications. A look behind the scenes however reveals a different picture. Like an old car that has been repaired cheaply for decades, the Internet has become a complex patchwork of countless makeshift solutions. The high complexity of the web results in immense costs for the administration. Attacks and continual new threats jeopardise large parts of the infrastructure. New applications with high requirements in terms of reliability and security urge for more fundamental changes on the web.

This is where Future Internet research comes in. Future networks should be able to administer themselves for the most part and to protect themselves from attacks. In addition, various applications should experience a direct dedicated support on a network level. For this, FOKUS is developing technical solutions for the Internet of the future in several national and international projects.
