The Fraunhofer FOKUS IPTV Ecosystem is an open standard end to end solution that provides a unique infrastructure compliant with ETSI TISPAN and Open IPTV Forum (OIPF) specifications. All components have been tested in a professional environment and developed specifically for client needs in consumer electronics, telecommunications and broadcasting. Developed ahead of standardizations for ETSI TISPAN, DVB or Open IPTV Forum, the Fraunhofer FOKUS IPTV Ecosystem is the first product on the R&D market to offer real IPTV implementation. The following overview explains Fraunhofer FOKUS components in more detail.
|

The goal of the Fraunhofer FOKUS IPTV Media Client Suite is to give developers, providers and consumers a personalized and easy-to-use “plug-andplay” interactive IPTV experience. Designed to create complex native, Web-based IPTV and media applications, this IPTV solution is geared toward telcos, consumer electronics and ISPs that use interactive TV and rich media services compliant with OIPF and ETSI TISPAN standards. Media and signaling technologies such as RTSP, HTTP, SIP, and Web services provide the communication interfaces. The presentation layer supports HTML5, CEHTML, .NET and Java FX and allows the creation of Media Clients. The Service layer consists of applications including hybrid TV, VoD, communications, content guides, personalization, communities, interactivity, and targeted advertisement.

The FOKUS IPTV Service Control (SC) is an implementation of the TISPAN IPTV Service Control Function (ETSI TS 182 027), OIPF Authentication and Session Management (ASM), and the IPTV Control Entity (OIPF Functional Architecture V1.2). The IPTV SC is responsible for service accessibility and managing incoming user requests for Live TV and Content on Demand (CoD), forwarding requests to the appropriate IPTV application server and the media servers represented by FOKUS IPTV MCD. The IPTV SC’s session repository interfaces third-party application servers, while ongoing IPTV session information is used for targeted advertisement, charging and billing, user tracking or interactive services. The IPTV SC is implemented as a converged SIP/HTTP Servlet (JSR289) and has already deployed on Oracle OCCAS, Sun’s Sailfin and the FOKUS SIPSEE. Future releases of the IPTV SC will support both managed telco networks using the SIP/IMS signaling as well as unmanaged HTTP networks and Web services.
Key Functionalities:
User Tracking & Monitoring
Third-party Interface throughout Session Repository
IPTV Session Management
Charging & Billing

The IPTV Content & Media Guide provides functionality for IPTV Content Management & Metadata Management and generates metadata for IPTV frontends such as STBs and TVs. The guide supports a variety of output formats.
Current Scenarios:
Interactive Voting
Interactive Quiz Show
Shopping and e-Commerce

IPTV Interactive Services provide server side logic and a graphical user interface for interactive IPTV services. This hybrid solution can be accessed by IMS-based IPTV user agents, Web services or HTTP interfaces, and implements draft services indicated in the TISPAN and OIPF draft specification. IPTV Targeted Advertisement The IPTV Targeted Advertisement (IPTV TAD) solution is an OIPF and ETSI TISPAN standard-compliant component for targeted and interactive advertisement and IPTV e-Commerce. Equipped with open communication interfaces to advertisers, content owners and service providers, IPTV TAD contains advanced refinancing and advertising formats that deliver targeted ads, non-linear and clickable content as well as interactive objects on TV screens.

The IPTV SMART Recommendation engine (IPTV SR) provides content recommendations based on user ratings or implicit feedback collected by the IPTV SC. The IPTV SR acts as a SIP or HTTP application server. Available services are Video on Demand recommendations and personalized TV channels which take into account user profile and ratings. IPTV Media & Content Delivery FOKUS IPTV Media & Content Delivery (MCD) is an implementation of the TISPAN IPTV Media Function (MF). Extensions for OIPF compatibility are currently under development. Fraunhofer FOKUS provides two versions of IPTV MCD. The basic version uses open-source software that functions as an SIP media server in standardized IMS-based IPTV environments. The enhanced version offers in addition DVB-C/-S/-T to IP turnaround, stream adaptation (transration & transcoding), user-generated content and mosaic.
