Context dissemination in peer-to-peer networks
Ragab, Khaled (Ed.) et al.: Developing Advanced Web Services through P2P Computing and Autonomous Agents: Trends and Innovation : trends and innovations. Hershey, Pa. [u.a.]: Information Science Publishing, 2009, 69-90
In recent years, peer-to-peer overlay networks have become a popular communication paradigm with the potential to further change communication fundamentally in the future. Overlays allow communication abstraction but suffer from one inherent problem: The overlay is unaware of the context of a service or the context of a service consumer. The concept of context-awareness emerged out of the research done within the area of ubiquitous computing. Context-aware computing is one key technology to enable services and applications in the communication environment to adapt their behaviour based on the knowledge of environmental (contextual) information, thereby enhancing the system's ability to become ever more responsive to the needs of the end-user or application domain. In this chapter we first introduce context and context architectures in general. In the remainder of the chapter we focus on the question: How can highly distributed context information be located and retrieved regarding small-scale as well as large-scale networks, addressing the topics of inter-domain management and scalability of context architectures?

Control of Resources in Pan-European Testbed Federation
Tselentis, Georgios et al.: Towards the Future Internet - A European Research Perspective. Amsterdam [u.a.]: IOS Press, 2009, pp. 67 - 78
The Pan-European laboratory Panlab is based on federation of distributed testbeds that are interconnected, providing access to required platforms, networks and services for broad interoperability testing and enabling the trial and evaluation of service concepts, technologies, system solutions and business models. In this context a testbed federation is the interconnection of two or more independent testbeds for the temporary creation of a richer environment or testing and experimentation, and for the increased multilateral benefit of the users of the individual independent testbeds. The technical infrastructure that supports the federation is based on a web service interface through which available testing resources can be queried, provisioned and controlled. Descriptions of the avail able resources are stored in a repository, and a processing engine is able to identify, locate and provision the requested testing infrastructure, based on the testing users requirements, in order to dynamically create the required testing environment. The concept is implemented using a gateway approach at the border of each federated testbed. Each testbed is an independent administrative domain and implements a reference point specification in its gateway.

OASIS Open Document Format ODF 1.0 (ISO/IEC 26300) and Office Open XML (ISO/IEC 29500) are both open document formats for saving and exchanging word processing documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Both formats are XML based but differ in design and scope. The White Paper "Document Interoperability; Open Document Format and Office Open XML" analyzes how both standards implement the most important document features, and if and how these features can be translated between the two formats. The White Paper targets users of both document formats as well as template designers whose competences cut across the spectrum of XML and XML-related technologies which directly or remotely deal with one or both of the two standards. The Paper will be of great assistance to those seeking to exchange documents between formats, to extract data from or import data into documents, or to write applications supporting the two formats.

Interoperabilität von Dokumentenformaten: Open document Format und Office Open XML
Stuttgart : Fraunhofer Verlag, 2009
(FOKUSbasic)

Design decisions that used to be made at the code level are increasingly made at a higher level of abstraction. This shift of focus from implementation to design requires the creation of a consistent, reusable and well-documented specification model. Nowadays, about 40% of embedded system designs are within 20% of functionality expectations. This is partially attributed to the lack of an appropriate approach for functional validation. To improve hybrid system design, this dissertation presents a test method at the model level. The so-called Model-in-the-Loop for Embedded System Test (MiLEST) approach primarily employs a systematic, structured, repeatable, and abstract test specification and concentrates on automation of the test process. A signal-feature - oriented paradigm allows an abstract description of a signal and addresses the problems of the missing reference signal flows as well as systematic test data selection. Numerous signal features are identified while predefined test patterns help build the test specification. Testing then starts in the requirements phase and goes down to the test execution level. MiLEST is implemented in MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow. Three case studies are presented. They correspond to component, component-in-the-loop, and integration level tests. Moreover, the quality of the resulting test models and test cases are investigated in depth.

Over the last few years, the scope of telecommunication services has increased dramatically making network infrastructure-related services a very competitive market. Additionally, the traditional telecoms are now using Internet technology to provide a larger range of services. The obvious outcome, is the increase in the number of subscribers and services demanded. Due to this complexity, the performance testing of continuously evolving telecommunication services has become a real challenge. More ecient and more powerful testing solutions are needed. This ability depends highly on the workload design and on the effcient use of hardware resources for test execution. The performance testing of telecommunication services raises an interesting problem: how to create adequate workloads to test the performance of such systems. Traditional workload characterization methods, based on requests/second, are not appropriate since they do not use proper models for traffic composition. In these environments, users interact with the network through consecutive requests, called transactions. Several transactions create a dialog. A user may demand in parallel two or more services and different behavioural patterns can be observed for different groups of users. This thesis proposes a performance testing methodology which copes with the afore mentioned characteristics. The methodology consists of a set of methods and patterns to realize adequate workloads for multi-service systems. The effectiveness of this methodology is demonstrated throughout a case study on IP Multimedia Subsystem performance testing.

Proof burdens and standards
Rahwan, Iyad (Ed.) et al.: Argumentation in Artificial Intelligence. Dordrecht [u.a.]: Springer Science + Business Media, 2009, 239-260
This volume is a systematic, expansive presentation of the major achievements in the intersection between two fields of inquiry: Argumentation Theory and Artificial Intelligence. Contributions from international researchers who have helped shape this dynamic area offer a progressive development of intuitions, ideas and techniques, from philosophical backgrounds, to abstract argument systems, to computing arguments, to the appearance of applications producing innovative results. Each chapter features extensive examples to ensure that readers develop the right intuitions before they move from one topic to another. In particular, the book exhibits an overview of key concepts in Argumentation Theory and of formal models of Argumentation in AI. After laying a strong foundation by covering th e fundamentals of argumentation and formal argument modeling, the book expands its focus to more specialized topics, such as algorithmic issues, argumentation in multi-agent systems, and strategic aspects of argumentation. Finally, as a coda, the book explores some practical applications of argumentation in AI and applications of AI in argumentation. Argumentation in Artificial Intelligence is sure to become an essential resource for graduate students and researchers working in Autonomous Agents, AI and Law, Logic in Computer Science, Electronic Governance, and Multi-agent Systems. The book is suitable both as a comprehensive introduction to the field, and also as a highly organized and accessible reference for established researchers.

Case Study: Interoperability in the EU Services Directive implementation
European Journal of ePractice, (2009), 6, 15-24
According to the European Services Directive, all member states have to support a genuine market in services by simplifying the communication between competent authorities and businesses by 2010. A so called Point of Single Contact (PSC) is supposed to assist in the complete life cycle of a business. At the same time, service providers should be able to do all their interactions electronically. The directive is an interesting move to push the member states towards a more cooperative and process-oriented electronic government. However, along with this directive, the governmental institutions at all levels - from local authorities to federal governments - have to cooperate, at least to interact with each other. Therefore one of the major preconditions to meet the overall objectives of the directive is to achieve interoperability between the competent authorities, and between PSCs and authorities. The Fraunhofer Institute for open communication systems (FOKUS) has been working since 10/2007 on an architectural framework and has built various prototypes to show possible technical configurations to meet the requirements of the EU Services Directive in Germany. The prototypes are not complete production-ready implementations by themselves, but they are useful to discuss further details and to-do's. Current work continues with the incorporation of identity frameworks such as the federID-Open Source Project or the Identity-Metasystem. With these results in mind, we realize that most of all there is a need for the standardization of Identity and Access Management (IAM) on the political, organizational and semantic levels. Technical interoperability between the EU-SD stakeholders is compulsory, not a feature. An appropriate means to achieve that interoperability and to discuss building blocks in an overall architecture is to create reference implementations based on open source software.

Intrusion Detection System for Denial-of-Service flooding attacks in SIP communication networks
International journal of security and networks, Vol.4 (2009), 3, 189-200
Security threats to Voice-over IP (VoIP) or IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) networks are becoming a major concern as their popularity increases. New attacks are being developed that directly target the underlying SIP protocol. To detect such kinds of attacks we are presenting a specification-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to recognise deviation from its expected protocol behaviour. We will present an implementation and show with measurements that this method is capable of attack detection and mitigation for different kinds of attacks directed towards a SIP infrastructure, with a focus on Denial-of-Service (DoS) message flooding.

Jumping to a Conclusion: Fallacies and Standards of Proof
Informal Logic, Vol.29 (2009), 2, 215-243
Five errors that fit under the category of jumping to a conclusion are identified: (1) arguing from premises that are insufficient as evidence to prove a conclusion (2) fallacious argument from ignorance, (3) arguing to a wrong conclusion, (4) using defeasible reasoning without being open to exceptions, and (5) overlooking/suppressing evidence. It is shown that jumping to a conclusion is best seen not as a fallacy itself, but as a more general category of faulty argumentation pattern underlying these errors and some related fallacies.

NNodeTree: A Scalable Peer-to-Peer Live Streaming Overlay Architecture for Next-Generation-Networks
Network Protocols and Algorithms, Vol.1 (2009), 2, 61-84
The rapid evolution of the telecommunication domain increases the performance of different access networks continuously. New services, especially in the domain multimedia content distribution, require higher and higher bandwidth at the users and service providers side [1]. Multimedia services like Video on Demand, IPTV and live streaming were introduced in the past and are still improved in quality and quantity. Multimedia streams and Peer to Peer (P2P) file sharing dominates the worldwide Internet traffic nowadays and will continue further. The user acceptance of enjoying multimedia content over the Internet will grow steadily together with the increasing quality of the available multimedia content. Network operators and service providers have to face the growths, by either increasing their service platform with higher performance and bandwidth or introducing a scalable solution. We present the design and implementation of a scalable Peer-to-Peer live streaming overlay architecture for Next-Generation-Networks (NGN) in this paper that addresses this challenge.

UniFAFF: a unified framework for implementing autonomic fault management and failure detection for self-managing networks
International journal of network management, Vol.19 (2009), 4=July/August, 271-290
Today's network management, as known within the Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Performance, Security (FCAPS) management framework, is moving towards the definition and implementation of 'self-managing' network functions, with the aim of eliminating or drastically reducing human intervention in some of the complex aspects or daunting tasks of network management. The fault management plane of the FCAPS framework deals with the following functions: fault detection, fault diagnosis, localization or isolation, and fault removal. Task automation is at the very heart of self-managing (autonomic) nodes and networks, meaning that all functions and processes related to fault management must be automated as much as possible within the functionalities of self-managing (autonomic) nodes and networks , in order for us to talk about autonomic fault management. At this point in time there are projects calling for implementing new network architectures that are flexible to support on-demand functional composition for context- or situation-aware networking. A number of such projects have started, under the umbrella of the so-called clean-slate network designs. Therefore, this calls for open frameworks for implementing self-managing (autonomic) functions across each of the traditional FCAPS management planes. This paper presents a unified framework for implementing autonomic fault management and failure detection for self-managing networks, a framework we are calling UniFAFF.

Components and Mechanisms of Autonomic Fault-Management for Self-Managing Networks
Berlin, Tech. Univ., Dipl.-Arb., 2009
UniFAFF steht für Unified Framework for Implementing Autonomic Fault-Management and Failure-Detection for Self-Managing Networks.

There are two main challenges for flexible service provisioning on top of todays Internet. First the end-to-end networking paradigm which is based on a service and data unaware transport, and secondly a lack of high level communication abstractions. With this thesis we approach both challenges. To address the first point we propose a methodology to integrate the Network Provider into the process of service provisioning. The introduced cooperative service provisioning (CSP) enables an interaction between Service Provider, Network Provider and Client. CSP can be applied in classical Provider as well as novel Peer-to-Peer scenarios. To address the second point, we adopt a Service Overlay approach. A new method based on the extension of Distributed Hash Tables (DHTs) is proposed to realise a distributed control plane for a decentral and reactive creation of Service Overlays. To archive this, a methodology to reduce Service Overlay related routing problems to search problems was developed. With regard to the required Quality of Service (QoS) measurements, the thesis focuses on scalable and time efficient estimation techniques. As a result, two new delay prediction schemes have been developed which improve estimation accuracy when compared to the state of the art. Furthermore, a novel approach to bandwidth estimation is investigated. It combines methods from landmark based delay estimation with a transformation step and has favourable estimation accuracy. A CSP prototype has been realised based on the Peer-to-Peer middleware software OMNIX [KKKD03]. For the implemented Content-Addressable Network (CAN) DHT a new algorithm to repair the CAN structure in case of multiple not gracefully leaving nodes has been integrated.

Energiemessdaten-Erfassung im Heimbereich mit drahtlosem Sensornetzwer
Berlin, Techn. Fachhochschule, Dipl.-Arb., 2009

Semantic Extensibility of SOA Governance Tools
Berlin, Hochschule für Technik, Bachelor-Arbeit, 2009
Due to the paradigm shift in enterprises that seek to better align their business and IT domains with the help of SOA, the policies, people, and processes used in ensuring that desired behaviours are adhered to in a SOA implementation are gaining immensely in importance. A number of SOA Governance solutions exist on the market today but none of them significantly harness the power of increasingly significant semantic technology. In the long run, the available tools on the market used in supporting SOA Governance will undoubtedly have to support semantic technologies to remain relevant and competitive as compatibility with the semantic web is fast becoming a basic prerequisite of web based solutions. This thesis starts by portraying the use of Tools for SOA Governance by contrasting leadi ng SOA Governance vendor solutions against the backdrop of semantic extensibility. It then goes on to evaluate the possibilities of syntactic versioning in SOA Governance tools and explore the possibilities of incorporating semantic technology as a means of making SOA Governance in general - and versioning in particular - more efficient. The purpose of this evaluation was to determine if semantic technology can be realistically incorporated as a means of optimizing SOA Governance. The evaluation was carried out by practically re-enacting a SOA Governance scenario. It began by running through the steps of the classical approach of enforcing a versioning policy then changing the environment to include semantic components which utilize ontology repositories that help map semantically similar ontologies to each other. The two approaches were then juxtaposed and evaluated. The thesis shows that semantic matchmaking is a technique which under optimal conditions- brings many advantages with it and can improve productivity. Despite few shortcomings, the evaluation shows that overall: the advantages of using semantic technology for versioning outweigh the status quo.

As research on self-managing networks is on the rise, a very important question requiring answers is: How to ensure that all autonomic entities/elements in a network or in a single node work together harmoniously with the aim of maintaining service availability and good levels of quality of service (QoS) provided to the end users? In this paper, we propose to enhance the Generic Autonomic Network Architecture (GANA) a recently emerged architectural Reference-Model for Autonomic Networking, such that actions, policy enforcements and/or (re-) configurations, issued by different autonomic (decision making) entities, are synchronized in such a way that they lead to the best possible (long-term) reaction of the system to the challenging conditions the network is exposed to.

Many new requirements for the public sector arise from the change of the society and the Age of Knowledge. Globalisation leads administrations to become more interoperable, irrespective of national borders. To meet these requirements, administrations and IT systems need to become more efficient. One of the main principles in software engineering is reusability. This can be applied on all levels. There is still a lot of potential at the content level. The idea of reusing content is not new but especially in federal structures where central solutions are nearly impossible this is a great challenge. The document describes an approach that allows information to be collected in a decentralised way and makes it available in an interdisciplinary manner and across regional borders. Core Director ies will be designed and used as an infrastructural component to make them accessible for multiple applications. In order to share information, data interoperability standards are needed.

(International Conference on Engineering of Complex Computer Systems (ICECCS 2009) <14, 2009, Potsdam>)
Proceedings of 14th IEEE International Conference on Engineering of Complex Computer Systems, Potsdam Germany, June 2-4 2009, 50-57
The European Space Agency (ESA) as many other companies is interested in capitalizing its business assets. With the space programmes often lasting 10 to 20 years, the software system migration problems arise frequently. The Object Management Group promotes the Model Driven Architecture (MDA) concept and proposes the Architecture Driven Modernization (ADM) approach for model-based platform migration. SOFTEAM, Fraunhofer FOKUS and GTI6 performed an ESA-funded study on Round Trip Engineering for Space Systems. During this study the state-of-the-art methods and tools for ADM and MDA were combined with state-of-the-art model based testing (MBT) approaches to safeguard the modernization process. Both techniques were assessed by applying them to a real-life use case the migration and testing of a distributed archive and versioning system. In this article we overview the combined platform migration and testing methodology used in the project and summarize our experience during its application to the ESAs File Archive System. We specially focus on real life experience with MBT and discuss lessons learned.

This paper describes a supervision system for autonomic distributed systems (e.g. a cloud computing environment). It is designed as a supplementary service and is structured as an ensemble of components that implement an autonomic control loop, which does not require any a priori knowledge on the structure of the supervised system. The architecture devised is highly modular and can be configured towards individual needs. In addition, the supervision system is able to re-configure itself according to the changes of the supervised system.

The convergence of telecommunication and Web 2.0 services is leading to new opportunities for the telecommunications market. Companies are looking for ways to include their services in Web 2.0 applica tions. Predictions suggest that future telecommunication networks will be based on the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), an all IP telecommunication core network. This paper describes an approach to combining Web 2.0 enabled applications, namely widgets, with telecommunication features using IMS. Widgets are small applications based on Web technologies that run on the client device. A new abstraction layer with interfaces for the dierent telecommunication features will be introduced. In addition a widget engine that makes these telecommunication interfaces available to its widgets will be presented. This will allow the rapid development of IMS applications for external developers and the combination of other Web 2.0 services with IMS features.

Wireless networking requires rapid configuration and control of network elements and services, as it implies a wide variety of technical challenges in a nearly unpredictable environment. A broad range of information is needed in order to capture the situation both in the environment and inside the network, so that systems can offer reliable network services to users and assist applications. As a basis, information from various sensors is used combined with in-network measurements. Most wireless scenarios demand the use of this context information for real-time operations that use unreliable network links. The aim of this paper is to describe the requirements and architecture for a suitable system for context management based on an existing network measurement approach. With th e example of a GPS-based location sensor and a location service we show how our context management system can be used.

(ICT-MobileSummit <18, 2009, Santander>)

Self-awareness is a much discussed property of autonomic and self-managed networks. Attempting to demystify this property we show that it can be captured by a Self Awareness Function (SAF) that stems from the assessment of process correctness of autonomic and cognitive networks. Based on multiple position papers that were written in isolation we are able to identify various SAFs (for trust, security, dynamics control, service deployment), as well as associated research issues (information modelling, higher contextualisation, convergence, etc.). We show that multiple issues of self-management that create a tangled hierarchy of control loops can be systematically addressed with SAF in mind.

Context aware applications are starting to be utilized more to build autonomic systems. Therefore, it is not only necessary to know how to build them but, once built, also how to test them. There are several agreed architectures on engineering these kinds of applications, but there is no common methodology for testing them. We propose in this paper a general method that can be applied in testing such applications regardless of their architecture. As an example, we will describe two components of this method a context dissemination system and a context generator. Applied to wireless networking we show how they are connected with each other as well as with the system under test

Generation of formal model metrics for MOF based domain specific languages
(International Conference on Model Driven Engineering Languages and Systems (MoDELS '09) <12, 2009, Denver, Colo.>)
Electronic Communications of the EASST, Vol.24 (2009), Proceedings of the Workshop The Pragmatics of OCL and Other Textual Specification Languages at MoDELS 2009, 1-16
The assessment of quality in a software development process is vital for the quality of the final system. A number of approaches exist, which can be used to determine such quality properties. In a model-driven development process models are the primary artifacts. Novel technologies are needed in order to assess the quality of those artifacts. Often, the Object Constraint Language is used to formulate model metrics and to compute them automatically afterwards. This paper describes an approach for the generation of model metrics expressed as OCL statements based on a set of generic rules. These rules can be applied on any domain specific modeling languages for creating a basic set of metrics which can be tailored for the specific needs of a development process. The paper also briefly describes a prototype of a tool for the generation, computation, and management of these model metrics by using the Software Metrics Meta-model - SMM.

This contribution addresses systematic test development methods to include an algorithm to retrieve a test suite execution control in order to run test cases with high priority earlier than others. The approach uses a model that allows both the introduction of user-defined weightings for system features within the test model and an automatic calculation of the test ordering. Based on an algorithm for the calculation of test case weights first results from the application of a tool implementation in pilot projects have been described.

Ambient Intelligence (AmI) is a vision of an environment with ubiquitous distributed devices embedded in everyday objects that are interconnected and seamlessly deliver applications and services. Based on concepts of ubiquitous computing, ubiquitous communication and intelligent interfaces, AmI puts the user in the center of future technological development. In this paper we consider human aspects of AmI in clinical scenarios. Our main objective is to extend process notations with human aspects which are then considered during system implementation. This is done in the context of a model for usability evaluation and a clinical application scenario. The usability evaluation model includes inspection methods such as cognitive walkthrough and action analysis, as well as test methods, such as questionnaires and expert interviews. Our preliminary results show the viability of the approach.

Collaborating enterprises require a common basis of understanding in order to carry out business effectively. This paper addresses the information requirements for small Internet Service Providers (ISPs) collaborating in a virtual ISP cluster to offer, provision and deliver tailored services to business customers, and reports on the information modelling undertaken in the European project VISP (IST-FP6-027178) to support these requirements. The resulting knowledge base is presented and, in particular, the methodology behind the modelling of ISP services for the ISP service knowledge base is provided. An overview is given of the implemented information repositories and the VISP application implementation, which supports a cluster of several partners within a fully decentralised architecture .

For many development departments in Embedded Software Engineering a migration from traditional developments for control device software programmed in embedded C code over to model-based development methods cannot be successfully achieved on an ad hoc basis. Successful migration calls for the creation of novel concepts and domain-specific methods, and the adoption of a careful and incremental approach to the integration of model-based development and its languages and tools in established development environments. The approach presented in this paper takes the case of model-based development of embedded software functions for a door control device to demonstrate how an open and vendor-independent standard (UML) together with MATLAB/Simulink can be deployed in Embedded Software Engineering f or specification, automatic code generation, simulation and rapid prototyping. Furthermore a modular integration in existing tool environments is presented without any need for abstraction of the required platform-specific aspects. It also shows a possible way for an intergration of several modeling languages like Matlab Simulink and established network databases (CAN) in the presented development process.

Ahamed, Iqbal (Ed.) et al.: 33rd Annual IEEE International Computer Software and Applications Conference, 2009 : COMPSAC '09 ; 20 - 24 July 2009, Seattle, Washington, USA ; proceedings. Piscataway: IEEE, 2009, 516-521
The increased amount of software in automotive embedded systems has challenged its C code development to successfully manage software design, reuse, flexibility and efficient implementation. Model-based methods help to address such challenges with more abstract specification, code generation and simulation to determine if software design will meet requirements. However, in todays development processes lots of different legacy artifacts are involved, that hamper a frictionless migration from C code to model-based design. Therefore, migration concepts and adequate domain-specific methods with adoption of modeling languages and their tools in established embedded coding environments are needed. In our approach we present a novel migration concept considering the integration of two different modeling languages UML and Simulink in a traditional automotive software engineering process. The proof is demonstrated within the software development of a real automotive car door-controller ECU.

Intrinsic monitoring using behaviour models in IPv6 networks
Strassner, John C. (Ed.) et al.: Modelling autonomic communications environments : fourth IEEE international workshop, MACE 2009, Venice, Italy, October 26-27, 2009. Berlin [u.a.]: Springer, 2009. (Lecture notes in computer science 5844), 86-99
In conventional networks, correlating path information to resource utilisation on the granularity of packets is a hard problem when using policy-based traffic handling schemes. We introduce a new approach termed 'intrinsic monitoring' which relies on the use of IPv6 extension headers in combination with formal behaviour models to gather resource information along a path. This allows a network monitoring system to delegate monitoring functionality to the network devices themselves, with the result of a drastic reduction in management traffic due to the increased autonomy of the monitoring system. As monitoring information travels in-band with the network traffic, path information remains perfectly accurate.

As knowledge representation tools become more sophisticated, and computer systems increase in power and ubiquity, the prospects of building practical applications based on the representation of large amounts of legislation draw closer. In this paper we reflect on our experience with developing a knowledge representation language for legal rules and an inference engine for this language in the Estrella project, in order to reconsider the principles which should guide the representation of legislation. One common demand, based largely on software engineering considerations relating to maintenance, verification and validation, is that representations should be isomorphic to their sources. We explore this notion by representing a fragment of German Family Law using our tools. We show t hat there are several different ways of representing even this small and simple fragment of law in an isomorphic fashion. Moreover these differences matter, in terms of where the burden of proof is allocated, in terms of the explanations produced, and in terms of the operational procedures that are reflected.

Legal Reasoning with Argumentation Schemes

ICAIL '09: Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Law. New York, NY: ACM, 2009, 137-146
Legal reasoning typically requires a variety of argumentation schemes to be used together. A legal case may raise issues requiring argument from precedent cases, rules, policy goals, moral principles, jurisprudential doctrine, social values and evidence. We present an extensible software architecture which allows diverse computational models of argumentation schemes to be used together in an integrated way to construct and search for arguments. The architecture has been implemented in Carneades, a software library for building argumentation tools. The architecture is illustrated with models of schemes for argument from ontologies, rules, cases and testimonial evidence and compared to blackboard systems for hybrid reasoning.

Measurements and evaluations for an IEEE 802.11a based carrier-grade multi-radio wireless mesh network deployment

Although there currently exists a number of Wireless Local Area Network based mesh network deployments most have been deployed to provide best effort broadband Internet access. Consequently, they cannot meet the requirements of network operators in order to utilise these networks to offer carrier grade services. The goal of providing carrier grade services over a wireless mesh infrastructure requires high performance in terms of throughput and reliability. One way of achieving this increase in performance is to utilise multi-radio Mesh Nodes, however, due to the Physical Layer layer limitations of 802.11a this can have significant problems. This paper analyses these issues and investigates what performance can be expected when frequency multiplexing is considered. The results presented in this paper are based on real measurements taken from multi-radio Mesh Nodes and are evaluated using statistical algorithms. The main contribution of this paper is an analysis of the impact of the Adjacent Channel Interference effect in 802.11a based multi-radio Mesh Nodes.

Proceedings of TRIDENTCOM 2009, 5th International Conference on Testbeds and Research Infrastructures for the Development of Networks and Communities, Washington DC, USA, April 2009. Piscataway, NJ: IEEE, 2009, 7
Functional Testing of service centric systems poses new challenges to traditional test design approaches. As a mean for achieving network and service convergence, such systems integrate various different notations and technologies into a common framework. Assuming that test artifacts targeting each of the technologies involved exist, designing functional tests at the service level, by integrating existing test artifacts is still a very complex engineering task. We propose to address those challenges with a model-driven test engineering approach based on test patterns. The approach allows tests to be designed at a higher level of abstraction as abstract test models, using a test specific, but platform independent modeling notation called UTML(Unified Test Modeling Language). We argue that our approach can be helpful in speeding up the production of new test cases through reuse of existing test artifacts and test infrastructure, as well as automated generation of executable test scripts from the abstract test models.

This paper intends to provide an architectural overview designed to improve interactivity around IPTV services, and focusing on optimization and new services that can be achieved when IMS is combined with existing standards such as MPEG-4, MPEG-7 and MPEG-21. Several approaches have introduced the need for an integrated solution within the core of an IMS network. In addition, MPEG as a set of standards has proved to be efficient and is well accepted in the IPTV industry world. On top of this architecture, various real life business cases are presented to show the improvements and advantages of this paper.

This article outlines the necessity for federated service oriented testbeds in order to accommodate the requirements of Future Internet research. Extensive investigations have been carried out in the networking and grid computing area during the last decades. These activities have successfully instantiated a number of large scale collaborative network testbeds and network emulation testbeds. The article describes an architectural approach on how to design service oriented testbeds and federate them across the boundaries of administrative domains to provide testing and development platforms that serve the needs of Future Internet research not only on the networking layer but also in the service and control platform layers.

The statechart formalism allows for the speci cation of behaviour odels of complex, reactive systems. It is employed in the embedded ystems domain to specify and verify applications at design time. By enabling the interpretation of formalised behaviour models one earns the favourable abilities of application behaviour inspection, control, and substitution at runtime. One of the major arguments against such an approach concerns poor interpretation performance and high-resource overhead. We are answering this argument by showing that it is feasible to implement a statechart interpreter on a resource-limited platform. We define the utilised statechart formalism and use it as a base for implementing a resource-efficient interpreter on a 8bit microcontroller with 2 kByte RAM. Performance overhead of key aspects of the interpretation engine is evaluated using suitable behaviour models and by comparison with compiled code.

Proceedings of TRIDENTCOM 2009, 5th International Conference on Testbeds and Research Infrastructures for the Development of Networks and Communities, Washington DC, USA, April 2009. Piscataway, NJ: IEEE, 2009, 1-8
The Pan-European laboratory - Panlab - is based on federation of distributed testbeds that are interconnected, providing access to required platforms, networks and services for broad interoperability testing and enabling the trial and evaluation of service concepts, technologies, system solutions and business models. In this context a testbed federation is the interconnection of two or more independent testbeds for the temporary creation of a richer environment for testing and experimentation, and for the increased multilateral benefit of the users of the individual independent testbeds. The technical infrastructure that supports the federation is based on a web service through which available testing resources can be queried and requested. The available resources are stored in a repositor y, and a processing engine is able to identify, locate and provision the requested testing infrastructure, based on the testing users' requirements. The concept is implemented using a gateway approach at the border of each federated testbed. Each testbed is an independent administrative domain and implements a reference point specification in its gateway.

Most legal tasks involve document preparation and review. Drafting effective texts is central to lawyering, judging, legislating, and regulating. How best to support that work with intelligent tools is an ancient topic in AI-and-Law research. For those tools to work, they must have good quality knowledge content to work with. Many alternative theories and techniques for modeling documents have been developed for particular kinds of situations. This article sketches a basic general theory of legal document modeling, with a focus on the key role of argumentation.

The visibility and success ofWireless Mesh Network (WMN) deployments has raised interest among commercial operators in this technology. Compared to traditional operator access networks WMNs have the potential to offer easier deployment and flexible self-reconfiguration at lower costs. A WMN-type architecture considered as an alternative for an operator access network must meet similar requirements such as high availability and guaranteed QoS in order to support triple-play content provisioning. In this paper we introduce an architecture of such a Carrier-grade Wireless Mesh Access Network (CG-WMAN). We then present our contribution, an approach to seamlessly integrate unidirectional broadcast cells (i.e. DVB-T) into such a CG-WMAN. This allows higher layer protocols to utilize broadcast ce lls like regular mesh links, where beneficial for a given payload and receiver distribution. We then present a typical use case and discuss for which combinations of traffic type, user distribution and QoS requirements the use of longer range broadcast technologies can help to improve the overall CG-WMAN performance in terms of throughput and reliability.

Future Internet (FI) research has made a big impact for a few years already. While most initiatives are still driven by academic groups we think it is time to trigger the dialogue with a broader industry community and ask the question how industry can profit today from recent findings in Future Internet research. In its tradition as a main driver for applied research in Europe, Fraunhofer organizes the Future Internet Industry workshop that brings together key persons from academia, industry and testbed operators. The Future Internet Tutorial provides an overview of FI research directions and trends and asks what results can have an impact today, which trends look promising and which solutions are expected to become mature in the near future. The technical sessions provide information about recent achievements.

Interoperabilitätssicherung der Zugangssicherung für IPTV: Präsentation der Studie bei der Telekom Bonn und Darmstadt
2009

Self-X Assessment - Congestion control algorithm: 09-11 December 2009
(International Workshop on Self-Organizing Systems (IWSOS '09) <4, 2009, Zurich>)
2009
Computer networks have experienced an explosive growth over the past decade. As a side effect of this growth, in 1986 the Internet had the first of what became a series of congestion collapses. The basic principle of congestion control used in todays Internet relies on an implicit or explicit collaboration of end systems and routers. This can lead to an unfair sharing of network resources e.g. in case UDP based communication. To address this issue a promising approach is to introduce self-x capabilities into the network, which deals with these problems. However, to evaluate a novel scheme for In-Network congestion control we argue that applying standard testing methodologies may not be sufficient. We therefore propose in this poster paper also guidelines of an assessment process suited t o evaluate it. The objectives of this research are to provide self organizing solutions to networks, especially in cases of traffic congestion and also a possibility to evaluate the emergent abilities of SONs by proposing a novel process. Moreover, this process allows us to compare different methods applied in network congestion control by placing them on the benchmark scale, run the situations and observes how far they advance on the scale. The assessment process can be applied not only to SONs and self-organizing systems but also to cognitive systems; in the latter case we will assess the ability of the systems to learn.
