Opening of the eIdentity-Lounge
Take a seat! In cooperation with representatives of the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Office for Information Security, Fraunhofer FOKUS has opened the eIdentity-Lounge in December 2009, targeting to set up the test and demonstration center for the new German ID-Card. The eIdentity Lounge aims to present future ID-Card-applications and identity related solutions. As a platform and showcase for innovative identity solutions, Fraunhofer FOKUS and “Bundesdruckerei” already facilitated the “Secure eIdentity Laboratory” in 2008.

International IBM Research Prize for Fraunhofer FOKUS
Fraunhofer FOKUS is gaining laurels for its research activities regarding the electronic safe for data and documents. On 15th December in Berlin Erwin Jung, director of IBM Science Relations, has awarded Prof. Dr. Radu Popescu-Zeletin with the International Shared University Research (SUR) Grant, which included prize money of 50,000 US dollars. IBM appreciates the efforts of Fraunhofer FOKUS on the project „elektronic safe“. The partners are targeting the conception and realization of a virtual safe for personal data and digital documents. The SUR points out the good collaboration between IBM and Fraunhofer FOKUS since the project started in April 2009.

Fraunhofer FOKUS Chairs First Conference on ICTs for Developing Countries
“Make the people in rural areas connected“, says Venancio Massingue, Minister of Science and Technology, Mozambique, when opening `Africomm´, the 1st International ICST Conference on eInfrastructure and eServices for Developing Countries. From 3rd to 4th December 2009 about 70 IT-experts from Academia and Industry meet in Maputo, Mozambique, presenting existing ICT-networks and applications designed for emerging countries. As part of the FOKUS NET4DC initiative, Fraunhofer FOKUS has put great effort to prepare the event and is chairing it.

First Open IPTV Forum Interoperability Event 2009
16th-20th November 2009, Berlin, Germany
The first ever Open IPTV Forum Interoperability Event (OIPF InteroP TV #1) has been facilitated by Fraunhofer FOKUS in Berlin, Germany. From Nov 16th to 20th core members of the OIPF Forum, including Ericsson, Fraunhofer FOKUS, Motorola, and Sharp, experimented and tested recent developments based on OIPF IPTV specifications. “We wanted to bring OIPF members and supporters one step closer to providing implementations of the OIPF specifications”, says Mr. Oliver Friedrich, Fraunhofer FOKUS. As an independent research institute, Fraunhofer FOKUS supports this process by offering prototypes and reference implementations.
NET4DC: Fraunhofer FOKUS announces new center for ICTs in Developing Countries
Connecting the Unconnected is the main idea of FOKUS NET4DC. The Fraunhofer Center for ICT in Developing Countries will provide information and communication technologies to include people plugging into the global e-communication arena – in rural, emerging and developing areas. Fraunhofer FOKUS is going to create the Center in January 2010 and this has been announced at a press briefing on 26th November 2009 in Berlin.

NTT enters in cooperation with Fraunhofer FOKUS
Strategic partnership between Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), leading communication, network and service provider in Japan and Fraunhofer FOKUS aims to fuel the development of service-oriented technologies for communication networks. The two partners agreed to develop technologies for Next Generations Networks (NGN) and perform research on new service platforms. The targeted platform will provide an environment for converged communication services, multimedia contents, and entertainment services.
