The webinos cross platform open source consortium releases its first specifications for review
The EU webinos consortium headed by Fraunhofer FOKUS is excited to announce that an important milestone has been achieved. The webinos consortium has released its first specifications and is inviting external feedback from car companies, phone manufacturers, mobile operators, TV companies, broadcasters and application and software developers. The specification builds upon the Device APIs and security work driven within W3C, HTML5, PhoneGap and the Wholesale Application Community (WAC), Already webinos members are developing implementations on different devices and operating systems – to trial and enhance these specifications. The webinos objective is to define a ubiquitous platform for secure, interoperable web application deployment. It is not just about getting web applications running in isolation on phones, but providing the technical architecture to allow web applications to run on, and communicate across, multiple device types (TV, Car, PC, Mobile).

VERSANT and Fraunhofer FOKUS Demonstrate Power of Object Databases to Deliver IPTV
Extensive lab benchmarking shows up to eight times improvement in performance and increased cost-effectiveness for complex content delivery.
Hamburg / Berlin, 15. March 2011 – Increasingly, rapidly growing numbers of users want to simultaneously access the same TV programs and channels. For this IPTV operators need technology infrastructures that can provide fast, robust and agile management of core IPTV systems. The results of a major applied research project has found that using object databases to manage IPTV delivers performance that is up to eight times faster than traditional means. The project was carried out by Berlin based Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems (Fraunhofer FOKUS) and Versant Corporation (NASDAQ: VSNT), an industry leader in high performance data management software. The Future is Now: webinos Aims to Deliver Seamless, Secure Exchange of Data Across Multiple Platforms
Apps for multiple devices – first research results published
Applications dominate today’s smartphone market. In the future, internet-capable televisions, tablet and desktop PCs, and cars will all run apps, which can, for example, help plan and book a ski trip.
To allow web applications run on four screens, the webinos project consortium creates a full open source code base. The targeted technology will allow different devices and applications to work together, securely, seamlessly and interoperable. Most recently, the consortium has summarized the first research results in four reports covering use cases, security, technical requirements and industry landscape.
The reports are now available for download at www.webinos.org
