The electronic processing of across-the-board functions within and between business, administration and communities - within the field of eGovernment activities, for example - makes it necessary to clearly define the roles and legal positions of the parties participating in the process.
The identification, specifications and administration of the individual players and their virtual identities including their associated digitally imaged information must be processed. Questions about the roles of the users, providers, clients, citizens, employees and the entitlements that accompany the subsequent individual roles must be resolved. Intelligent solutions must be found for the individual and secure use of identity documents and for the field of access management.
Today, both the user’s need for protection of their private data and the interests of official and commercial institutions can be taken into account using IUK technology’s service oriented approach. This begins with administering passwords and ends with the creation of trustworthy authorities that process applications and ensure privacy.
The challenge here also lies with the cross organisational management of identities – both from an organisational and a technical viewpoint.
At Fraunhofer FOKUS we develop solutions along with our partners that enable secure identity administration on all platforms. Through its competency in the interoperability of technologies and products in the fields of eGovernment, eBusiness, telecommunications and mobility, Fraunhofer FOKUS provides an excellent platform for the cooperative development and testing of innovative IT solutions in the field of identity management.
For this reason we opened the Secure eIdentity Lab in April 2008 together with the Bundesdruckerei (federal printing office).
