Cognitive Radio Networks: Assessment Framework of Cognitive networking for the End-To-End Efficiency
Zhang, Yan (Ed.) et al.: Cognitive radio networks : architectures, protocols, and standards. Boca Raton, Fla. [u.a.]: CRC Press, 2010. (Wireless Networks and Mobile Communications), 423-455
Cognitive radio networks are believed to be self-managed. Do we know how to engineer such systems? And, if such engineering is done, do we know how to assess the properties of a self-managed system? Additionally to performance evaluation and testing to guarantee for such systems consistency, safety, purposefulness, security, and efficiency of their operation engineers require assessment - systematic evaluation [of non-conventional to previously engineered systems] properties such as cognition, learning, aware sensing, and perception. Technology-wise we analyse the problem area of flexible spectrum management and suggest that both [self-] management and assessment problems can be solved within the same framework - situation-aware behavioural composition - the key to our policy approach. We describe a model-driven assessment framework: the driving model in the cognition cycle is the enabler of robust control with agile policies - here the "Subject - Object" policy-based self-management framework is introduced; the framework is interpreted from the control theoretical viewpoint; we then compare assessment with the performance evaluation of cognitive networking, and conclude that the evaluation of the process correctness is the main difference between the two. We derive primary assessment metrics and build some derivatives that, using the specific objectivity framework of G. Rasch allow us to define the assessment of process correctness in the way that does not depend on particular cognition algorithm. We report the on-going research and show some early results, followed by the open issues section.

Conceptual Design and Use Cases for a FIRE Resource Federation Framework
Tselentis, Georgios et al.: Towards the Future Internet - Emerging Trends from European Research. Amsterdam [u.a.]: IOS Press, 2010, 51-62
Projects of the Future Internet Research & Experimentation (FIRE)initiative are building an experimental facility that shall serve the needs of Future Internet research and development. The main design principles are virtualization of resources and federation. Federation is a means to meet requirements from Future Internet research that cannot be met by individual testbeds. In particular, to support large scale experiments utilizing heterogeneous resources, a federation of experimental facilities is needed. While several initiatives are currently establishing large scale testbeds, the mechanisms for federating such environments across the boundaries of administrative domains are unclear. This is due to the lack of established and agreed federation models, methods, and operational procedures. In this article we propose a federation model that defines high level conceptual entities for federating resources across administrative domains. A first prototype implementation of the functional components derived from the model has been realized and evaluated. This is demonstrated by the discussion of use cases that depict the flexibility of the proposed approach. The model can guide future testbed developments and harmonize the currently scattered efforts across several FIRE projects in order to establish an agreed resource federation framework. This framework shall be the basis for Future Internet research and experimentation in Europe and provide experimental facility services to academia and industry.

Detecting mental states by machine learning techniques: The Berlin Brain-Computer Interface
Graimann, B. (Ed.) et al.: Brain-computer interfaces : revolutionizing human-computer interaction. Berlin, New York, NY: Springer, 2010, 113-135
The Berlin Brain-Computer Interface (BBCI) uses a machine learning approach to extract user-specific patterns from high-dimensional EEG-features optimized for revealing the user's mental state. Classical BCI applications are brain actuated tools for patients such as prostheses (see Section 4.1) or mental text entry systems ([1] and see [2-5] for an overview on BCI). In these applications, the BBCI uses natural motor skills of the users and specifically tailored pattern recognition algorithms for detecting the user's intent. But beyond rehabilitation, there is a wide range of possible applications in which BCI technology is used to monitor other mental states, often even covert ones (see also [6] in the fMRI realm). While this field is still largely unexplored, two examples from our studies are exemplified in Sections 4.3 and 4.4.

Interoperability - A Challenge of the EU Services Directive
Charalabidis, Yannis (Ed.): Interoperability in Digital Public Services and Administration: Bridging E-Government and E-Business : bridging e-government and e-business. Hershey [u.a]: information science reference, 2010, 26
The EU Services Directive (EU-SD), which was passed in December 2006, should simplify access to the services market in all Member States of the European Union and eliminate bureaucratic barriers for Service Providers. This chapter presents an overview of the major functional components and processes that are necessary to implement and run the EU-SD between all stakeholders such as Service Providers, newly introduced Points of Single Contact and Responsible Public Authorities, based on a general framework for federated enterprise SOA. Especially in Germany, consisting of federated and autonomous federal states, but equally between different Member States, interoperability between different components is one of the major challenges of the EU-SD. This chapter elaborates on the interoperabilit y aspect of data/document exchange between the stakeholders, using a secure "call by reference" concept that is implemented by an Electronic Safe, together with appropriate concepts for identity and access management.

(Workshop über selbstorganisierende, adaptive, kontextsensitive verteilte Systeme (SAKS 2010) <2010, Kassel>)
Electronic Communications of the EASST, Vol.27 (2010), 2-11

A decentralised service composition approach for peer-to-peer video delivery
Peer-to-Peer networking and applications, Vol.3 (2010), 3, 222-236
Recent platforms for Peer-to-Peer (P2P) based video distribution such as Zattoo and Joost are based on End-Host or Application Layer Multicast techniques. An on demand adaptation of audio/video data to end user terminals or to the transport and error characteristics of the client access technology is not supported. To address such issues in the scale of P2P Networks, we describe a cooperative service provisioning principle (CSP) based on the assumption that selected peers offer processing services to the community. In contrast to recent approaches our main focus in this paper is on the applicability of QoS estimation techniques to decrease time and measurement complexity of CSP. We provide a state of the art in landmark-based delay estimation and introduce a novel technique for landmark-based bottleneck bandwidth prediction showing favourable results for networks with widest path routing.

Mixing workflows and components to support evolving services
International Journal of Adaptive, Resilient and Autonomic Systems (IJARAS), Vol.1 (2010), 4, 60-84
Composite distributed services involve local and remote services that get orchestrated according to specific business logic. This logic can be programmed by applying a traditional general-purpose programming language, but is generally described using a workflow language that coordinates a set of given services. The services involved in the composition, or the composition may need to evolve both at the business logic level (workflow level) and the global architecture level. This paper presents a solution to ease such evolution for compound distributed services and the authors proposal enables the evolution of both the business logic and the underlying architecture. This paper suggests relying on a distributed software component model to represent and easily manage the set of local or remot e software entities (services) involved in the composition. Composite services are represented in a model that combines the use of a distributed and hierarchical software component model and new timed-automata based workflow language. This combination makes explicit the separation between functional and non-functional concerns, and as a consequence this approach helps in defining the required and various evolution procedures in context to compound services.

Pan-European testbed and experimental facility federation architecture refinement and implementation
International journal of communication networks and distributed systems, Vol.5 (2010), 1/2, 67 - 87
Large future internet research programs such as GENI, FIND, and FIRE are under way that will have a global impact on the current and future internet. Experimental facilities and testbeds are needed to support both revolutionary and evolutionary approaches for re-thinking and improving the internet architecture. The resource federation framework proposed by the authors makes available multi-domain testbeds providing heterogeneous crosslayer infrastructures for broad testing and experimentation purposes. Currently, it is unclear how new concepts and ideas developed by the future internet research community can be integrated into production systems while preserving infrastructure operator investments. Service oriented experimental facilities are required that integrate technologies and concep ts across various domains and layers and actively incorporate different market players. In this article, we briefly introduce the network domain federation model as the basis and architectural mindset for the Pan-European Laboratory (Panlab) concept, introduce technical architecture refinements, and outline first implementation results.

Smart advertising in the home of the future
International Journal of Computer Aided Engineering and Technology, Vol.2 (2010), 2/3, 164-180
With the emergence of smart home environments, services are constantly subject to changes, seeking the customer's full satisfaction. Enriching these services with innovative approaches such as context-aware, mobile, adaptable and interactive mechanisms, enables users to experience a variety of personalised services seamlessly across different platforms and technologies. Moreover, considering advertising as the enabler for next generation services, it is important to explore its integration into new domains. This paper, therefore presents a framework approach to address advertising solutions focusing on smart home environments, enriching the overall user quality of experience. In addition, by over viewing the current smart homes market scenario, it provides the vision to overcome the established advertising paradigms focusing on key points like user privacy protection, online social networks and reality mining technologies.

A configurable, heterogeneous device cloud for web applications
Berlin, Techn. Univ., Dipl.-Arb., 2010
A key challenge during the development of Web Applications on top of multiple heterogeneous devices is to discover and get access to device-specific resources. In order to enable access to these resources, users must install proprietary software on their devices. Other devices use protocols like UPnP to connect seamlessly with the environment. A Web Application, which uses resources from heterogeneous devices, must support several interfaces. New and changing interfaces can force the developer to modify his Web Application. An interface, that abstracts the underlying heterogeneous user devices and offers their resources to Web Applications, is required. This diploma thesis delineates the solution statement for the described problem. An architecture is required, which enables and virtualizes the resources of user devices. The shared user resources are accessible through a uniform interface, so that Web Applications can easily use them. User devices and their services are mapped to a RESTful API, which abstracts from the executing resource. In doing so, the communication protocols or API's used by the underlying resource are completely hidden from the user of the RESTful API. This increases the interoperability for a looser coupling between the parts of distributed devices, because the user can replace resources with new ones without an update of the Web Applications, which use these resources. This facilitates the creation of mashups, which combine traditional Web 2.0 services with resources from the user. The user controls the access to his resources with a user-configurable rule-based system. This system provides fine-granular adjustments for the access rights to user resources. The described concept is the base for a prototype implementation.

Design and Implementation of a Converged Open Messaging Architecture for Next Generation Networks
Kiel, University of Applied Sciences, Master Thesis, 2010
This thesis presents a research project on multi-channel messaging for Next Generation Networks (NGNs), covering miscellaneous aspects of convergence. It describes an architecture on top of an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) for implementing an Instant Messaging (IM) service based on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) that allows an easy and straightforward integration of various heterogeneous messaging protocols to deliver continuity of service with legacy networks. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) introduced "SIP for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions" (SIMPLE) as a protocol suite that constitutes an open and interoperable standard for instant messaging and presence. Relying on this set of specifications, the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) has developed an ap plication enabler (SIMPLE IM) that defines a complete architecture and framework in order to enable interactive communication capabilities over an IP-based infrastructure. OMA Converged IP Messaging (CPM) specifies the successor enabler which provides a transparent and seamless approach of interworking between disparate messaging services in the Telecommunications and Internet domain while leveraging standardized functionalities from existing enablers. The drafted framework of CPM has been the fundamental design pattern for the system layout realized within this work. For this thesis developed, the converged messaging architecture extends the previous mentioned SIMPLE IM enabler with several components. Interworking Functions (IWFs) represent the protocol adaption logic between SIP and the specific messaging protocol whereas an Interworking Selection Function (ISF) is responsible for delivering the messages towards the appropriate IWF. In addition, an Application Control Function (ACF) will be introduced which exposes the messaging features to external functional components like Value-Added Service (VAS) applications. Furthermore, this thesis outlines the integration into a NGN infrastructure and the benefits and open issues arising from this concept. A broad overview of the specification and standardization landscape is given as well as the interconnection between existing and ongoing standards that are relevant for this research topic. In addition to basic considerations it is intended to also deal with the practical prerequisites which inform the system design. As a p roof-of-concept, the Converged Open Messaging Server (COMS) has been developed, implementing the designed architecture. COMS is integrated and validated on the Open SOA Telco playground provided by Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS. The paradigm demonstrates the feasibilities in multiple use case scenarios including messaging convergence and the interaction with other telecommunications enablers and messaging protocols, just as innovative context-aware approaches which enable the users to experience a variety of personalized services seamlessly across different platforms and technologies.

Nowadays complex distributed applications are often built on top of autonomous functional entities called Web services. There exist various heterogeneous technological domains that Web services can belong to. The used protocols and programming models may differ vastly from the ones used in other domains. This fact poses a challenge to developers that want to create service compositions incorporating services from different technological domains. Developing such a composition requires knowledge about the involved data formats, protocols and other technology specific details of the involved services. This diploma thesis will firstly present a concept that provides a model for uniform interfaces for services stemming from heterogeneous technological domains and, secondly, a model that allows the creation of service compositions from heterogeneous services, utilizing the uniform interface. The concept will also provide means to handle heterogeneous data structures within a service composition and a runtime environment allowing the execution of composite applications which use the underlying data model.

Formalization of a Converged Internet and Telecommunications Service Environment
Potsdam, Univ., Diss., 2010

An underlay system for dynamic and distributable web applications
Berlin, Techn. Univ. Diss., 2010

Flow Selection Techniques
2010
Flow selection is the process of selecting a subset of flows from all flows observed at an observation point. The objective of flow selection is to reduce the effor for post-processing flow data and for transfering flow records. The flow selection process can be enabled at different stages of the measurement process. It can be applied directly after classification or at recording/exporting time by limiting the number of flows to be stored and/or exported to the collecting process. This document describes motivations for flow selection and presents flow selection techniques. It furthermore provides an information model for configuring flow selection techniques and discusses what information about a flow selection process is beneficial to b e exported by adopting a suitable information model.

Towards a Future Internet Tournament
Berlin : Fraunhofer FOKUS, 2010
Todays Internet suffers from many problems caused by its patchwork structure and insufficient support for mobility, security and quality. Future Internet research is investigating new architectural solutions in order to replace this patchwork architecture by evolutionary or revolutionary means. Triggered by large (research) programs in the US, Europe and Asia several approaches have gained momentum and prototype implementations are on their way. We propose a Future Internet Tournament (FIT) - a hands-on approach to develop and to demonstrate advances in networking. The FIT provides descriptive and expressive challenges to researchers with the focus on core functionalities like data transport or routing, which can be also enjoyed by a broader, technically skilled or even lay audience. The main idea is to run real networking algorithms in a simplified but realistic network environment of a set of network nodes that can be influenced by the algorithms. Designers of algorithms will find in the FIT a platform to illustrate their ideas outside simulators and at the same time an environment for direct competition and comparison of their approaches. We learn from existing challenges and tournaments, and discuss possible scenarios and the first ideas for realizing FIT. In summary, we would like to open a discussion by presenting some cornerstones for such an approach. The realization needs a group of interested partners, which will certainly influence the discussion and the first release of the Future Internet Tournament.

3GPP Evolved Packet Core- the Mass Wireless Broadband all-IP architecture
(World Telecommunications Congress 2010 (WTC 2010) <2010, Wien>)
Telecommunications: the infrastructure for the 21st century : proceedings. Berlin [u.a.]: VDE-Verlag, 2010, 1-6
Driven by the roll-out of new wireless access technologies providing only packet transport capabilities like the 3GPP Long Term Evolution, the Next Generation Mobile Broadband Networks are bound to support wireless broadband com-munication in a data dominant environment. In order to respond to the requirements of the new environment, 3rd Generation Partnership Project defined the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) as a new IP connectivity control platform enabling wireless access network diversity (including LTE, UMTS, WiMAX, WiFi etc.) and offering seamless connectivity for the various service platforms. It maintains the same central concepts as previous 3GPP architectures, like IMS: policy based QoS and charging, subscription based access control, handover support and security, limiting its goa ls to offering the connectivity without direct binding to the services themselves. This paper presents the main concepts driving the evolution of the mass wireless broadband networks concentrating on the 3GPP EPC architecture with its key components, capabilities and interactions revealing the opportunities and challenges brought for the applications in the new environment.

The Future Broadband Wireless environment is characterized by the co-existence of a multitude of wireless networks e.g. LTE, UMTS, WiMAX, WiFi etc. In order to be able to offer the best connectivity, according to the requirements of the user and to the preferences of the operator, a novel functionality was introduced in the network and in the mobile devices for access network discovery and selection. This paper introduces this functionality as standardized in the 3GPP Evolved Packet Core (EPC), highlighting its main concepts and technical scenarios. Further a set of novel optimizations are evaluated, followed by the description of the Fraunhofer FOKUS OpenEPC implementation.

The increasing size, complexity and the dynamic character of future networks make traditional monitoring systems inadequate to be continuously updated and sense the endless changes in the topology and communication conditions. The need for reduction in the network management complexity and the administrator's operational burden imposes the design and implementation of self-functionalities and the adoption of self-management schemes. We propose a novel approach for improving network management based on distributed monitoring techniques. Autonomic mechanisms are designed to control traffic monitoring within a network in order to increase the accuracy of the acquired data without increasing the imposed overhead in the network. Nodes are able to correlate monitoring data and to adapt the monitoring functions according to existing networking conditions and predefined administration policies.

Architecture-Driven Testing using TTCN-3
Proceedings of the 22nd International Conference Software & Systems Engineering and their Applications : ICSSEA 2010, December 7-9 2010 at TELECOM ParisTech, Paris. Paris: Telecom ParisTech, 2010, 1-5
Success coming with MBT highly depends on the availability of the underlying system specification and the acceptance of related tools. In industrial practice is has been found very often that the system specification could not be fully completed and need to be restricted to selected parts. The Architecture-driven test approach (ADT) considers a system specification that is decomposed following different viewpoint that allows an easier understanding due to various abstractions. In this contribution we discuss how we extend our work that has been introduced earlier on ADT in order to execute ADT-based test descriptions against real systems in the context of the automotive domain.

The programmable network envisioned in the late 1990s within standardization and research for the Intelligent Network is taking another attempt to come into reality using IP- based Next Generation Networks (NGN) and Application Programming Interfaces (API) for open developer access. Adopting technical concepts of providing high-level APIs for open service access from the Internet and World Wide Web (WWW), some major telecommunications operators have started developer portals to allow 3rd party developer access to internal service enablers and network functionality. Composition of services by using these exposed APIs may be realized on multiple layers. We address in this report the composition of services based on orchestration languages and assess those in the context of the execution of real-time communication services. We propose a two-folded composition model for component and workflow driven compositions.

EuroITV '10: Proceedings of the 8th international interactive conference on Interactive TV & Video. New York, NY: ACM, 2010, 197-204
It is a consensus that during design phase stakeholders should have a deep understanding about usage of the new technology as supposed to be appropriate to the target users it is the case of Digital TV in this study context. This requirement addresses one primary research question: how stakeholders, who live in contexts extremely different from the users´ context, can design and implant Digital TV for diversity? Our aim is to describe the assessments and consensus related to users needs for cross-cultural stakeholders with limited prior knowledge of users context. A socio-technical analysis was done identifying technical-contextualsocial factors based on an organizational semiotic framework. The results lead to useful insights that can guide managers of multinational driven projects to define better integration strategies.

Basics and application trends for the Testing and Test Control Notation TTCN-3
Proceedings of the 22nd International Conference Software & Systems Engineering and their Applications : ICSSEA 2010, December 7-9 2010 at TELECOM ParisTech, Paris. Paris: Telecom ParisTech, 2010, 1-39
Strong dependencies exist between innovations - standards and markets: Innovations influence standards and markets. Standards have impacts on markets and often are the basis for innovations. The market solutions are combined into standards. And new markets could be understood as an innovation. The testing technology TTCN-3 appears in all of these aspects. It is an established standard widely used in industry; it includes and brings up innovative concepts. This technology is evolving due to increasing industrial requirements and new research ideas. The roots of today's "Testing and Test Control Notation" (TTCN-3) started in the 80s. New tool and industrial test suite standards appeared shortly after its first publication by ISO. Initially used in telecommunication, today TTCN-3 i s applied for testing complex software in nearly all industrial domains. In particular, new application areas are automotive, medical, aerospace, and finance systems. TTCN-3 is a success story. Engineering departments of tool manufacturers and research institutes are using TTCN-3 as a target notation in the context of model-based testing. This year the European Standardization Institute (ETSI) has published several innovations that provide a standardized basis to the industry for innovative testing. Substantial work has been undertaken for "embedded TTCN-3" that includes real-time aspects and continuous systems. In the case of TTCN-3 the standardization bodies succeeded to create an engine for innovation and new markets. The tutorial provides the understanding of basic concepts t ogether with a presentation of latest concepts and new directions for the test technology TTCN-3.

Digital Identity has grown separately in the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and the Internet in general. On the one hand secure but walled garden services are offered on the other hand the focus is on openness and third party integration. However, future Telco-business needs an inter-working of IMS and Internet. This paper discusses use cases, economical benefits and technical solutions for bridging these two worlds based on the findings presented also in an upcoming whitepaper from the Telecommunication Identity work group of the Kantara Initiative.

Carneades and abstract dialectical frameworks: A reconstruction
Baroni, P. (Ed.): Computational Models of Argument : Proceedings of COMMA 2010. Amsterdam: IOS Press, 2010, 3-12
Carneades is a rather general framework for argumentation. Unlike many other approaches, Carneades captures a number of aspects, like proof burdens, proof standards etc., which are of central importance, in particular in legal argu- mentation. In this paper we show how Carneades argument evaluation structures can be reconstructed as abstract dialectical frameworks (ADFs), a recently proposed generalization of Dung argumentation frameworks (AFs). This not only provides at least an indirect link between Carneades and AFs, it also allows us to handle arbitrary argument cycles, thus lifting a restriction of Carneades. At the same time it provides strong evidence for the usefulness of ADFs as analytical/semantical tools in argumentation.

Computation of Things for Human Protection and Fulfillment
(IEEE-HST 2010)
Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Technologies for Homeland Security 2010
Computer science and computational engineering have enabled great advances in modeling and simulation to analyze various scenarios. Still, facilitating and enhancing situational awareness for a single human is rarely considered. Poor decisions by an individual encountering everyday challenges or public threat situations can have dramatic effects, both for the individual and others. In the presented research, a Computation of Things (CoTh) framework is proposed to provide individual decision support during crises and prevent long-term deviations from safe and secure conditions. The target of CoTh is to enable a profound understanding of the situation from the viewpoint of individual persons in order to permanently reduce their fear, while simultaneously increasing awareness of appropriate responses. CoTh allows for a quick forecasting of action (or non-action) alternatives based on an individual human context, including geographic position (e.g., pollution level and energy usage), activity patterns (e.g., personal nutrition habits, lifestyle, traveling load, family status, circle of friends, social network, and virtual life), and state patterns (e.g., the DNA, current health conditions, and musculature of a human), depending on the considered situation. Insights into CoThs motivation, requirements, and challenges are provided and the architecture proposal is depicted.

In remote parts of Africa, the lack of energy supply, of wired infrastructure, of trained personnel and the limitation in OPEX and CAPEX impose stringent requirements on the network building blocks that support the communication infrastructure. Consequently, in this promising but untapped market, the research aims at designing and implementing energy-efficient, robust, reliable and affordable wide heterogeneous wireless mesh networks to connect geographically very large areas in a challenged environment. This paper proposes a solution that is aimed at enhancing the usability of Internet services in the harsh target environment and especially how the end-users experience the reliability of these services.

Dynamic Protocol Functionality in Cognitive Future Internet Elements
Cunningham, Paul (Ed.) et al.: Future Network and Mobile Summit 2010 Conference Proceedings. Dublin: International Information Management Corporation Ltd (IIMC), 2010, 8
Composing communication protocols as needed is a topic researched for a long time with moving focus. Nevertheless the vast flexibility of these proposals also prevented the real world success: there was no management solution available that could cope with the many degrees of freedom such architectures offer. This paper discusses the Dynamic Protocol Composition (DPC) architecture developed in the Self-NET project which aims at integrating cognition and autonomics in self-managed networks by the Generic Cognitive Cycle consisting of three phases: Monitoring, Decision-Making and Execution. The presented DPC architecture is therefore designed to serve as an execution capability for a powerful and intelligent decision making process. Since the various potential use cases of DPC in autonomous networks differ heavily with respect to situation awareness and decision making, an example is given. Furthermore the architecture and operation of the DPC implementation is presented. First experiments on packet loss compensation show that dynamically applying Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) using DPC on routers allows to improve quality of service and network performance significantly without constantly adding load to the link concerned.

Due to a rapidly shifting technology and competitive market environment, Telecommunication and Internet Services are constantly subject to changes, creating new challenges and needs for the industry to keep generating revenues. A high level of customization is therefore identified as a key enabler for achieving customer satisfaction and improving their quality of experience. Enriching services with innovative approaches such as context-aware, adaptable and interactive mechanisms enable the vendors to deliver tailored and personalized experiences to its customers. This article presents a concept to integrate policy-based decision mechanisms into the architecture of a Next Generation Network (NGN)-based converged messaging enabler for supporting adaptive personalization and context-aware service delivery across heterogeneous networks and messaging technologies. The system reacts to context changes and makes real-time decisions about handling incoming messages according to the users' preferences. A prototype has been implemented as part of the Open SOA Telco Playground testbed at Fraunhofer FOKUS.

Establishing a Service-Oriented Tool Chain for the Development of Domain-Independent MBT Scenarios
Sterritt, Roy (Ed.) et al.: 2010 17th IEEE International Conference and Workshops on Engineering of Computer-Based Systems ECBS 2010, 22-26 March 2010 Oxford, England : proceedings. Los Alamitos, Calif. [u.a.]: IEEE, 2010, 329-334
Since software systems become more and more complex, the efforts for developing, documenting and executing meaningful test cases increases. Testing is a vital, but time- and resource-consuming activity. To avoid running out of time or budget, new test methodologies had to be established in order to increase reliable, yet maintainable test scenarios. In the last years the Model-Driven idea matures to the most promising approaches to solve current problems in the software development domain. Model-Based Testing adopts these concepts to exploit their benefits for testing area. In this paper an integrated tool chain (called FOKUS!MBT) is discussed, to enable a Model-based development of testing scenarios. It is based on a canonical metamodel for testing concerns and a service-oriented model storage and exchange infrastructure, that allows a flexible, yet extensible adaptation to different test process requirements. Its premise is to establish a tooling architecture for the specification and development of a domain-independent Model-based testing scenario.

Up till now, there is no convenient way for users to interact with any kind of video data or video content. Such interactions are known from internet data or computer games, which have a different data structure from video data. Video comprises filmed real scenes, or at least real scenes which are augmented by editing e.g. with a computer. It is the purpose of the present platform to provide a system and data structures, which allow a user initiated interaction with video data on TVs, Mobiles and the Web in a harmonized and easy way. This paper describes the realization of the above outlined user initiated content interaction to deliver value-added information, links and advertisements on-demand and in a personalized way. The envisioned solution will help to satisfy the ever-increasing dem and of the content production as well as advertisement industry for predefined interfaces to place advertisements and product related information in close vicinity to particular objects within a scene.

This position paper shall contribute to the discussion around heterogeneous resource federation models, strategies, and implementation scenarios. From the authors point of view, overcoming heterogeneity is the most challenging issue where not only the resources but also the federation mechanisms and implementations themselves are heterogeneous when federating across the boundaries of federations. Federation might take place on several abstraction layers where in the end different federations might agree to federate on yet another overarching level. This will ultimately lead towards a massive federated resource pool where users can assemble desired functionality across layers and administrative boundaries upon demand in a seamless manner. This vision is driving our work.

The transition from mere content consumers to more proactive prosumers that transformed the web is finding now place in the context of idtv. In the close future it will be common that TV content will be empowered with interactive applications that will be created not only by professionals but also on the final users side. This fact will change the traditional role and stereotype of TV users from 'coach-potatoes' to active generators of content. This paper presents a step forward to this vision through the development of a content creation tool for enabling local communities to create and share idtv content. The paper presents the tool development process as a user-centered approach and its evaluation in a real context.

Goal selection in argumentation processes: A formal model of abduction in argument evaluation structures
Baroni, P. (Ed.): Computational Models of Argument : Proceedings of COMMA 2010. Amsterdam: IOS Press, 2010, 51-62
When argumentation is conceived as a kind of process, typically a dialogue, for reasoning rationally with limited resources under conditions of incomplete and inconsistent information, arguers need heuristics for controlling the search for arguments to put foward, so as to move from stage to stage in the process in an efficient, goal-directed way. For this purpose, we have developed a formal model of abduction in argument evalution structures. An argument evaluation structure consists of the arguments of a stage, assumptions about audience and an assignment of proof standards to issues. A derivability relation is defined over argument evaluation structures for the literals in a stage. Literals which are not derivable in a stage are out. Abduction is defined as a relation between an argument evaluation structure and sets of literals, called positions, which, when the assumptions are revised to include the literals of the position, would make a goal literal in or out, depending of the standpoint of the agent. Soundness, minimiality, consistency and completeness properties of the abduction relation are proven. A heuristic cost function estimating how difficult it is to find or construct arguments pro a literal in the domain can be used to order positions and literals within positions. We compare our work to abduction in propositional logic, in particular the Assumption-Based Truth Maintenance System (ATMS).

An IPTV Service State API for converging managed and unmanaged IPTV infrastructures
Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo ICME 2010 Singapore, July 19-23, Singapore, 1493 - 1498
In this paper we present an approach towards an open API for managed and unmanaged IPTV Ecosystems, as standardized in Open IPTV Forum and ETSI TISPAN. Inspired by ETSI TISPAN's so called IPTV Service State, containing information upon a current user's service usage data and behavior, the design and implementation of an IPTV Service State API realized inside the FOKUS IPTV Ecosystem will be presented. The goal of this API is to provide a protocol independent mechanism allowing access to an IPTV service provider's infrastructure and its users. The API enables on the one hand other service enablers to manipulate a single user's IPTV session, e.g. for targeted ad insertion, as well as various Web oriented client technologies (e.g. Widget oriented systems) to be integrated into standardized infrastructures.

Multi-Hop Packet Tracking for Experimental Facilities
(Conference on Computer Communications (SIGCOMM '10) <2010, New Delhi>)
SIGCOMM '10: Proceedings of the ACM SIGCOMM 2010 conference on SIGCOMM, 447-448
The Internet has become a complex system with increasing numbers of end-systems, applications, protocols and types of networks. Although we have a good understanding of how data is transferred over the network we cannot observe what happens with our data after sending and before receiving it - how packets traverse through the network and with which QoS characteristics remains unknown. Towards this objective we have developed a multi-hop packet tracking system intended to be used in experimental facilities, such as PlanetLab, where we have made our first tests. This paper describes our packet tracking realization and the results from our prototype implementation.

International Academy, Research, and Industry Association: CONTENT 2010 : the Second International Conference on Creative Content Technologies, November 21-26, 2010, Lisbon, Portugal . Online Resource, 34-38
Non-linear video is an approach, which makes video content an interactive experience. Non-linear video gives the viewer the opportunity to interact with objects that are part of the video and access supplemental information. On demand, multimedia content is linked with related information. Interactive, time independent navigation opens a new ways to experience video content. This paper shows how such an system could be built upon IPTV and web technology in a cross platform manner.

Nowadays technologies, frameworks and architectures are forced to be service driven, platform independent, reliable and scalable. Application markets, Service Oriented Architectures and Cloud Computing are currently in focus of the new upcoming business models. Based on an analysis of service life cycle management and composition standards the following article illustrates an architecture for a service platform. This component provides both the export of internal software components as services (inside-out approach) as well as a flexible service life cycle management by considering the needs of Platform as a Service (Paas )and Software as a Service (SaaS). Furthermore, the platform is able to import external services in order to enlarge the service portfolio (ouside-in approach) or even to compose the services to create new mash-up services. This leads to collaboration and resource federation between service providers whereas the service access is organized and protected by a policy-based service management function.

Probabilistic semantics for the Carneades Argument Model using Bayesian Belief Networks
Baroni, P. (Ed.): Computational Models of Argument : Proceedings of COMMA 2010. Amsterdam: IOS Press, 2010, 255-266
This paper presents a technique with which instances of argument structures in the Carneades model can be given a probabilistic semantics by translating them into Bayesian networks. The propagation of argument applicability and statement acceptability can be expressed through conditional probability tables. This translation suggests a way to extend Carneades to improve its utility for decision support in the presence of uncertainty.

Requirements of a model-driven methodology and tool-chain for the design and verification of hierarchical controllers of an autonomic network
Borcoci, Eugen (Ed.) et al.: The Third International Conference on Communication Theory, Reliability, and Quality of Service - CTRQ 2010 : 13-19 June 2010, Athens/Glyfada, Greece; proceedings. Online resource. Los Alamitos, Calif. [u.a.]: IEEE Computer Society, 2010, 208-213
Model-driven approaches to design, simulation, verification, validation and testing of complex systems are increasingly required in every domain of systems and software engineering where the systems are complex. The domain of autonomic network engineering is one such new area calling for such model-driven approaches. In this paper we provide the requirements of a model-driven methodology and Tool-Chain for the design and verification of hierarchical controllers of an autonomic network. The requirements are classified as behavioral, structural and stability requirements. Based on these requirements, we propose a hybrid approach that combines design techniques from modern control theory, conventional protocol design and model-driven systems engineering for the design of hierarchical controll ers that meet the stability, structural and behavioral requirements of their autonomic network architectures. The methodology addresses the problems of behavior conflicts, stability, response time problems and operating regions conflicts of hierarchical controllers. A Tool-Chain to realize the proposed methodology is also presented.

In this paper we propose a mediated business process modeling approach, where ontology-based information models are used for the semantic modeling of information flow in cross-organizational business processes. Rule-based semantic bridges are applied for the automated mediation between different domain vocabularies used in the organizations' process models. This allows for interchange and interconnection of business process models, as well as for mediation between the abstract business level and the concrete IT level. We implemented the approach as an extension of an existing BPMN modeling tool and evaluate it on the basis of an e-commerce use case.

Test automation encompasses all activities to automate various steps in the overall testing process including automation of test management, test generation, or test execution. The standardized Testing and Test Control Notation (TTCN-3) addresses selected challenges by defining a test specification language and a test system architecture that enables the implementation and execution of TTCN-3 test suites. Over the years, the standard has continuously being maintained and evolved. For example, concepts for static test configurations or for advanced parameterization and typing have been defined. The paper reviews the history and current status of TTCN-3 and concludes by giving an overview on recent extensions of TTCN-3 and future plans.

Towards a conceptual framework for semantic interoperability in service oriented architectures
(International Conference on Intelligent Semantic Web-Services and Applications (ISWSA 2010) <1, 2010, Amman>)
Proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Intelligent Semantic Web-Services and Applications. Online Resource. New York, NY: ACM, 2010, 12:1-12:7
The application of Semantic Web technologies to service-oriented architectures (SOA) has promised to mitigate the problem of achieving semantic interoperability as the formal definition of semantics paves the way for higher automation in the mediation process between heterogeneous services. Recently, many ontology-based approaches for semantic interoperability have been developed. However, it remains difficult to compare the various approaches because only domain-specific conceptual frameworks for semantic interoperability exist. Moreover, in SOA practice ontology-based approaches are not widely adopted but still XML-based solutions are dominant. This paper targets to fill this gap and presents ongoing work towards a general conceptual framework for semantic interoperability in SOA as a foundation for comparative reflection. Based on the framework selected approaches both academic and industry-driven are compared. Furthermore, an inherent trade-off between efficiency and effectiveness in achieving semantic interoperability is identified and a potential alleviation based on semantic mediation on domain level is outlined.

The emergence of self-managing networks can be seen as an enabler for increased dependability, reliability and robustness of the network layer. All these features are significant for the services and applications relying on the network infrastructure. This paper explores the links between traditional Fault-Management functions belonging to the management plane and the fundamental network functions for Resilience and Survivability embedded inside the protocol modules of a node/device. This results in an architectural framework that allows nodes/devices to implement the converging aspects of Fault-Management (now becoming autonomic), Resilience and Survivability in a self-managing network. The components and adaptation mechanisms of the proposed framework will make the network layer more robust and application/service aware. Thus, the dependability, reliability, and adaptability of the upper layer services and applications are expected to increase.

The ability to dynamically adopt protocol functionality to the current situation will greatly improve performance, service availability and quality of service in the Future Internet. Nevertheless this provides a huge set of configuration and adaption options which have to be controlled intelligently and also in a timely manner. This creates need for a multi-level control and configuration framework. This paper presents a architecture for Dynamic Protocol Composition with some experimentation results and the design of a control and configuration framework that allows for ecient and reactive Protocol Composition and Execution while providing many options for configuration for a cognitive system and network management.

Transferring the principle of loose coupling to the semantic level
(International Conference on Intelligent Semantic Web-Services and Applications (ISWSA 2010) <1, 2010, Amman>)
Proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Intelligent Semantic Web-Services and Applications. Online Resource. New York, NY: ACM, 2010, 5:1-5:6
In this paper we present a conceptual approach that transfers the well established principle of loose coupling from the functional level to the semantic level of information models. Key characteristics of loose coupling in systems engineering are identified in order to map them to the challenge of achieving semantic interoperability between heterogeneous information models in distributed service-oriented environments. A specification of loosely coupled information models is provided and its instantiation by means of ontology-based approaches is discussed.

Using the UML testing profile for enterprise service choreographies
(EUROMICRO Conference on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications (SEAA 2010) <36, 2010, Lille>)
O'Conner, Lisa (Ed.): Proceedings of the 36th Euromicro conference on software engineering and advanced applications : Lille, France. Los Alamitos, Calif. [u.a.]: IEEE, 2010, 12-19
In this paper we present an approach of using model-driven technologies for testing of service component interactions. We report on an industrial experiment with a novel combination of existing UML standards, i.e., the UML Testing Profile (U2TP), in conjunction with proprietary domain specific languages (DSLs). Many model-based testing (MBT) approaches use the UML 2 standard, but very few of them use also U2TP. Moreover, in practice UML coexists with DSLs which makes the overall integration not easy. We present our experiences and challenges of a U2TP-enabled MBT approach for a DSL for enterprise service choreographies, which describe the communication protocols between service components. The proposed workflow directly translates choreographies into UML models augmented with U2TP stereoty pes, which are further loaded into our FOKUS!MBT tool chain. The tool provides an implementation of the U2TP standalone meta-model along with test case and test data generators to describe a holistic test process within one dedicated meta-model for testing concerns.

Basics and application trends for the Testing and Test Control Notation TTCN-3: 22nd ICSSEA, Paris
(International Conference Software and Systems Engineering and their Applications (ICSSEA 2010) <22, 2010, Paris>)
2010

The CESAR Reference Technology Platform: 29-30 June 2010
(ARTEMIS Technology Conference 2010 <1, 2010, Budapest>)
2010
Developing embedded safety-critical systems is a challenging mission. Usually, there are multiple tasks to accomplish comprising activities like requirements management, system architecture design, component design, coding, simulation and tests. Each of these activities is complex in its own and is often supported by highly specialized software tools. But using these specialized tools together in a coordinated way within a development team, which is probably spread across multiple locations, is far from being simple. There is a lack of interoperability among these tools and only some vendor-specific solutions and point-to-point integrations can be used. In particular it is difficult to share data between these tools and to establish an end-to-end traceability from requirements to test results without substantial manual work. The CESAR project addresses these issues and creates the CESAR Reference Technology Platform - RTP. The CESAR RTP is a means helping to establish seamlessly integrated tool chains. This talk presents the general concepts of the CESAR RTP including the RTP ModelBus and exemplary scenarios based on the first results of the CESAR project.

In the presented vision various aspects of the sustainability (e.g., the relation between a persons quality of life, climate change, and social awareness) are highlighted to explore and share how an individual impacts and is impacted by the surrounding. Ultimately a technological solution called Computation of Things (CoTh) is outlined. It allows for a quick and reliable assessment of peoples possible decision paths and how this affects sustainable development on a local and global scale. Forecasting life-path alternatives for a human based on its geographic position (including pollution level, energy usage), activity patterns (including nutrition habits, lifestyle, traveling load, family status, circle of friends, social network, or virtual life), and state patterns (including individua ls DNA, current health conditions, musculature) is targeted.

Test automation encompasses all activities to automated various steps in the overall testing process including automation of test management, test generation, or test execution. The standardized Testing and Test Control Notation (TTCN-3) addresses in particular test execution automation by defining a test specification language and a test system architecture that enables the implementation and execution of any correct TTCN-3 test suite. Over the years, the standard has continuously being maintained and evolved. In particular, concepts for advanced parameterization and typing and for real-time tests have been defined. The presentation will provide an introduction to TTCN-3 and present recent extensions.
